Joseph McNicholas, Ph.D., M.B.A. is the Director of Research Opportunities at the Sanford School of Public Policy where he leads a school-wide effort to increase and enhance applications for research grant opportunities from federal and non-federal funding sources.Previously, he served as the Director of Research Opportunities for the Franklin Humanities Institute at Duke University where he played a key role in supporting and coordinating complex proposal projects across Duke University’s Humanities, Arts, and Interpretive Social Science departments, including collaborative opportunities with other schools, University Institutes, and units at Duke and beyond.Prior to joining Duke, Joseph served as Director of the ORSP at Loyola Marymount University where he increased the portfolio from $2.8 million to $8.4 million in annual awards annually, streamlined the grant submission process; attracted talented people to his office; delivered clear and consistent communication to deans, faculty and others about funding opportunities; provided guidance and coaching to faculty and staff; and supported the development of a culture of compliance.Previously, he served the University of Redlands as Director of Foundation and Government Relations (where he secured a $3 million gift for an arts facility as well as $4 million in federal appropriations), as Assistant Director for Faculty Development at California State University, San Bernardino, and as a grant writer and adjunct faculty member at the State University of New York, Oneonta.Joseph has served his professional organization, the National Council for University Research Administrators in leadership positions and through extensive conference presentations.
