The 1st Cavalry Division had deployed to Iraq several times, but when the unit began preparations for their first Afghanistan deployment, they sought out officers with experience in Afghanistan. As one of these officers, I joined them in Combined Joint Task Force - 1 and served on their current operations staff. I managed all operations in eastern Afghanistan during daylight hours. I also coordinated operations with international allies from 5 different countries. I tracked over 15,000 mission reports during our deployment, and wrote the standard operating procedures for how these reports would be managed, stored, and disseminated to the appropriate personnel. I also created training scenarios to exercise the staff in responding to critical and time-sensitive events.

I was selected to join the brigade current operations staff while in Afghanistan. I supervised all night operations conducted within the brigade’s area of operation and maintained complete situational awareness of all events and missions. I allocated time-sensitive personnel and resources in response to over 500 events during the final 3 months of deployment. Each day I briefed the brigade commander on these events and their resolutions.

I led and trained 10 Soldiers on the company’s fire support team, responsible for employing artillery, mortars, and combat aircraft in support of the company’s missions. Our team achieved the highest team scores on the annual Fire Support Certification Exam, solidifying our reputation as subject matter experts. While deployed, I coordinated and led combat missions in eastern Afghanistan, and fostered a healthy working relationship with the local population. Served as the platoon leader for the headquarters staff, consisting of 25 additional Soldiers from 10 different Military Occupational Specialties.
