As a substitute teacher, it is my responsibility to ensure that regular lesson plans remain intact regardless of whatever happens in the regular teachers' lives. This responsibility requires me to remain literate in a wide variety of subjects, from calculus to graphic design to political science, and be ready at any moment to help students discover answers to questions on these subjects. I also play the role of disciplinarian, striking a fine balance by allowing individual students the freedom to learn in such a way that most benefits them, without permitting them to disrupt their classmates' education and run roughshod over school rules and policies. I also deal with disruptions born of the very lesson plans I implement; scrounging materials, altering pre-planned sequences, and changing assignments to account for the on-the-ground realities of the modern classroom and make sure the regular teacher's end goals are achieved.

As a volunteer at the Deer Run branch, it was my job to help ensure that the circulation desk ran smoothly. This focused primarily on sorting newly-returned materials, but touched on a wide range of other activities. I retrieved materials from the stacks to fill reserves, I helped assemble and maintain displays, and I tracked down missing books and DVDs on the shelves. I took the initiative in managing the library's untracked paperback collection, establishing procedures governing the introduction, management, and withdrawal of the books to keep the collection fresh for library patrons. I responded to patron inquiries in the stacks, directing them to the material they were looking for, or to a full employee when the challenge proved too troublesome for me alone. I helped patrons and staff alike utilize and troubleshoot the library's digital and electronic offerings, becoming a valued resource for technological support, and I took an active role in supporting library programming, from all-ages talent shows to activities for local seniors. But most importantly, I learned what it takes to work in a real library, as part of a real team, to support a real community.

My practicum is where I really cut my teeth as a cataloger and metadata librarian. It was enlightening to actually put all of my studies to practical use, and see where they both reflected and collided with actual patterns and practices of use. My most significant project was updating old catalog records from the local history collection, removing unacceptable subject headings, adding relevant ones, and correcting those which weren't quite in line with standards. I also performed copy cataloging on a number of new donations to the library, and in a few instances drew up original records from scratch. I also studied real world procedures for accession, materials transfers, weeding, and other collection development activities; as well as fulfilling patron requests for new materials. I spent time with the technical operations staff practicing the more concrete aspects of library administration, processing incoming materials as well as repairing damaged items sent in from the district's branches. I also had the opportunity to sit in on district administration meetings, where I studied the higher-level operation of the library and even chipped in during discussions of the library's digital offerings.

As a Census enumerator, my job was the practical fulfillment of one of the cornerstones of American democracy: equal representation. I canvassed neighborhoods daily to ensure that those who had not received their Census forms, had forgotten to return theirs, or had otherwise not responded to the decennial Census, were still counted to ensure proper representation in federal, state, and local governments. I met daily with my supervisors to review the prior day's events and establish a plan of action going forward. I assuaged fears in reluctant or skeptical respondents, explaining the importance of the Census, describing the strict security under which their records are kept, and helping them secure their voice in American government.

Rolla, Missouri

As a member of Missouri S&T's "Miners in Space" team, I supported the school's entry in NASA's Reduced Gravity Student Flight Opportunities Program, an experiment studying the challenges of welding in microgravity. I helped compose the technical proposal which was submitted to NASA, and ultimately led to the flight of our experiment on NASA's C-9 "Weightless Wonder". I took an active role in advocating for the program and explaining the potential benefits of the experiment, especially relating to long-term spaceflight and human settlement. On flight day, I assisted our team's flight crew in their preparations, ensuring a rapid turnaround for the experiment's two flights and enabling each member of our team to remain focused on their own roles.

Rolla, Missouri

My work as a volunteer in the local junior high school put me on the proverbial front lines, helping 8th and 9th grade students gain a firmer grasp on the mathematics they were learning in their regular classes. I tutored students to improve not just their classroom performance, but ultimately their understanding of the material, and I followed several students' progress throughout the months I worked with them. I also supported the middle school competitive math team, ensuring that their practice sessions ran smoothly and that they were prepared to triumph in formal competitions.
