About Dr. Joe Scherrer

If my leadership philosophy that I describe below or my career track record appeals to your company or organization, let’s talk. This is my sweet spot: seeing the vision of what can be, formulating a strategy to get there, and building high-performing, cross-functional teams to make it happen, especially when the opportunity and stakes are high. The greater the complexity and ambiguity, the better. As an executive leader, my career experiences have provided me with broad and deep expertise in organizational leadership, strategy development and implementation, non-profit entrepreneurship and leadership, and IT and cybersecurity enterprise operations. I approach challenges from a systems perspective which makes me adept at dealing with problems that cross multi-disciplinary lines. And it works: These capabilities combined with my leadership experience, particularly at the executive level, have enabled me to succeed in diverse roles, often well outside my core expertise.I’ve applied them in many widely different situations: From writing the Department of Defense’s first national military strategy for cyberspace, to revitalizing the performance of professional education in a top-tier U.S. university, to serving as the city manager of a military installation with a population of 23,000, to founding two non-profits focused on cybersecurity training and education, to forging a comprehensive partnership to alleviate the scourge of illicit drugs affecting families and citizens in a local community, to leading the Air Force’s only combat-coded deployable communications wing. I’ve even written a book on leadership and published a theory of it I call Virtue-Driven Leadership©.Ultimately, my reward comes from having achieved goals that the organization in which I serve, our clients, our stakeholders, and my team can be proud of. And I’m not satisfied until that happens: it’s the leadership coach in me who wants to see his players and his team be the very best they can be.Yes I’ve had oversight for eight-figure budgets, yes I’ve led organizations of thousands of people, yes I've had P&L responsibility, yes I’ve felt the crushing pressure of delivering a massive project on-time and on-budget for a client, and yes many times I’ve faced the fear of potential failure. But, this quest for excellence and seeing it baked in from the C-suite to the front line is what drives me and sustains me in good times and in bad. There are dozens more stories I can tell, but here’s the bottom line: With the teams I lead, the people become better and so does the organization.
