Since 1991, as mentors, youth leaders, counselors, case managers, intervention specialists and violence interrupters, we at Youth ALIVE! have worked to help violently wounded people heal themselves and their community. Our mission is to break the cycle of violence and uplift a thriving community of leaders rooted in Oakland and beyond through prevention, intervention, healing and advocacy. We believe that young people growing up and going to school in the city’s most violent neighborhoods, possess the power to change the city for the better. We meet our clients where they are, at home, in school, at the hospital bedsides of young shooting victims, on the streets of our most dangerous neighborhoods.Our frontline staff is comprised of men and women who grew up in the communities they serve. Some are former victims, some former gang members. All are highly trained in the best practices of their profession. They bring not judgement, but only understanding, knowledge, and a path to greater peace for traumatized individuals and the city.Our primary goals along the way to achieving our mission:- To educate and train young leaders to create a more peaceful community- To interrupt the cycle of violence on the streets- To convince angry victims and their loved ones not to retaliate- To provide ongoing support to help the wounded and grieving get needed services and heal from their trauma

Health Policy Research Scholars is a national leadership program supported by the Robert WoodJohnson Foundation to build equity by investing in scholars from populations traditionallyunderrepresented in graduate programs whose research, connections, and leadership willinform and influence policy toward a Culture of Health.

Experienced facilitator and community-based participatory researcher able to sustain engagement of diverse clients in the design, implementation, and analysis of evaluation and research strategies. Specializing in qualitative and mixed-methods research. Evidenced by the establishment and management of a joint research team that led to sustained participation of academic partners at the University of California, Berkeley, and community partners at Pogo Park in Richmond, CA, over four years.

Excellent program evaluation skills. Demonstrated by managing a mixed-methods 2-year evaluation of expanded violence intervention services. The resulting evaluation report highlighted the effectiveness of the intervention and areas for further development at Youth ALIVE!

Strong ability to coordinate efforts across multiple partners. Demonstrated by developing a 35-hour training designed in collaboration with 21 content experts. The result is the curriculum used by the Violence Prevention Professional certification program, which is recognized by the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services.

Adept at finding commonalities amongst diverse communities and responding to their unique needs. Demonstrated by project management of training and technical assistance for four sites initiating violence prevention programs ranging from dense urban environments to a rural reservation.

Strong ability to manage and guide a diverse team in a health care setting. Demonstrated by the management of a team of six: three health educators, a nurse educator, an IT specialist, and an administrative clerk. Delivered new employee orientation monthly, created e-learning modules for staff and community members and documented and tracked the educational requirements of over 6,000 employees.

Program Coordinator, Making Time for Health Making Time for Health was an innovative stress reduction through time management program aimed at improving the health of underserved students at UC Berkeley that I developed.

NNHVIP was a network of hospital-based violence intervention programs dedicated to promoting and expanding the model as a strategy to reduce and prevent community violence. NNHVIP is now its own organization and known as The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention (The HAVI).
