Non Executive Director
Non Executive member of the Board at Unnio Seguros Generales in Chile. Monthly Board meetings and frequent exchanges with senior managers on different aspects of the business.
Chief Executive Officer For Latin America
As Chief Executive Officer for Latin America, in 2011 I was also appointed to the Group Executive Committee, reporting directly to the Group CEO. As CEO for Latin America, I was responsible for overall strategy and direction of businesses in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Puerto Rico, generating sales (premiums) for USD 1.4B (2013). My role involved responsibility for all aspects of the business, with all of the 2000 staff in the region reporting into me. Having been personally involved in more than 10 acquisitions in Latin America, I worked closely with the senior management team and travelled regularly throughout the region. During the last years I took the regional responsibility for teams working on i) Developing a direct e-commerce business proposition ii) Improving the sophistication of motor insurance underwriting models iii) Regional Bancassurance opportunities and iv) Acquisitions. As a member of the QBE Group Executive Committee, I interacted with different global initiatives and groups, including regular presentations to the Group Board, global and local regulators, rating agencies, investors and analysts. In 2012 and 2013 I chaired the Group Underwriting and Distribution Forum, formed by the 12 most senior global underwriters. The GUDF met quarterly around the world and discussed business development and innovation opportunities for the wider Group. In June 2014 I provided notice of resignation and voluntarily left QBE at yearend 2014.
General Manager For Latin America
As General Manager for Latin America, I was responsible for strategy and overall direction of our businesses in the region, reporting to the CEO of The Americas. During most of this time, I was also a member of the US Executive Management Board.QBE´s businesses in Latin America developed through a steady combination of organic growth and acquisitions. As the business grew in size and complexity, so did the requirements around reporting and governance from our shareholders and my role was to harmonize both constituents and provide a suitable operating model to the entrepreneurs that ran the day to day activities of the different countries.Integrating acquisitions was a major part of my role during 2005-2010 and in all cases other than one, we were able to retain the original management of the business and gradually bring them into the QBE culture. Many of these former individual managers form today our senior team in Latin America. In 2011 I was appointed CEO for Latin America and my reporting line was changed towards the Group CEO.
General Manager
I was appointed General Manager of HIH ART (today QBE Seguros La Buenos Aires ART), a small mono-line insurer writing workers compensation in 1999, when I was 27 years old and clearly not mature enough for the job.In March 2001, as HIH went into liquidation in Australia, I led a group of managers in presenting QBE with the opportunity to jointly acquire the company and this became QBE´s first owned business in Latin America. With QBE´s strong support, we significantly downsized the company (to about 60% of revenue and 50% of staff) and put together a ruthless plan to restore profitability, amid a very severe general economic crisis in Argentina. Over the next five years we were able to transform a money losing business into one of QBE´s most profitable businesses around the world. In 2009, I stepped down for the role, in order to concentrate my time on the Latin American role.
Underwriter
I joined Gen Re out of university in 1995 and held a number of different junior jobs at the company. In 1996 I joined the Treaty Division as an underwriter, to concentrate specifically in the newly created workers compensation system. In 1997 I was named responsible for the underwriting team of workers compensation, health and life reinsurance. In 1999, I accepted an offer to become General Manager of an important customer, HIH ART.
