Jose Tovar is a Software Engineer at SMC³. Colleagues describe him as "Jose joined OneTrust as an intern on our Cookies (CMP) team in May 2019. I had high expectations for him from the start due to the performance of another recent KSU graduate who had already joined the team as a full-time hire and was setting a new bar for how much value one person could contribute to the team. The project given to Jose was to create a new API that accepted an array of parameters that subsequently leverage our existing APIs to generate an SDK that would be deployable without a client ever needing to create an account. This meant Jose needed to understand how the product worked from start to finish so that he could determine what APIs to call. Additionally, it meant he had to coordinate across multiple module teams as well as security operations. This would have been a relatively daunting project for a senior engineer given the considerable unknowns. Jose delivered on this ask with relatively little direction. He did this by quickly understanding the team dynamic and utilizing the resource at hand to learn for himself. Unsurprisingly, we asked Jose to return for a full-time position at OneTrust our CMP team. Jose’s immediate contributions to the team as a full-time engineer were impactful to the point I couldn’t tell you the difference between him and some of our senior developers. One of the characteristics that set Jose apart from many of the engineers I’ve worked with is his attention to design. By this, I don’t mean simple API contract design, but rather, the design of how the user is going to experience the interaction. This sets him apart as an engineer as someone who inherently becomes a missionary not a mercenary for the product on which he’s working and makes him a valuable contribution to the team’s culture.
