Like most community resilience practitioners, my favorite metaphor involves elephants. Why? Because resilience planning often requires talking about "the elephant in the room" - big, challenging and sometimes scary issues that most folks would rather ignore. How do I help communities address issues like these? I work on projects that enhance community well-being in the short-term while ensuring that in the long-term they can mature, adapt and survive regardless of the type or scale of threat they might face along the way. With 14 years of practice in land-use planning, green building, sustainable development, hazard mitigation, disaster recovery and community engagement, I’m able and committed to seeing things from many points of view.On a given day, you might find me:• Working with graduate students at the University of Oregon to develop innovative tools that better integrate climate change and natural hazard planning;• Collaborating with federal and state agency staff on the delivery of technical assistance to local governments;• Volunteering with the Oregon Chapter of the American Planning Association’s Legislative and Public Affairs Committee;• Developing grant requests that leverage limited local resources to accomplish regional planning projects.I encourage you to learn more by reading my bio on the Oregon Partnership for Disaster Resilience staff webpage (http://opdr.uoregon.edu). While there, take a few minutes and tour the website. You will find many of the projects I’m working on summarized there. And please let me know if you have questions or feedback! Send me an email at jbruce.planning@gmail.com. Tell me what you are interested in. I may know someone you need to meet . . .Specialties: community resilience; risk assessment; hazard mitigation planning; disaster recovery; sustainability; project management; green building and design
