At Williams Baptist, I taught and redesigned nearly every literature course in the curriculum. The now-retired chair had served for over fifty-two years at the university and was a beloved local institution. However, much of the actual functioning of the department, particularly the composition courses, was quietly devolved on me. I on-boarded new faculty and adjuncts, designed teaching materials, decided program direction, and collected outcomes-assessment data. My other duties included schedule-making and proposal-writing as well as instructing new advisors. I was also twice elected by my peers to the six-person faculty senate, the lead representative body, and sat on the crucial outcomes assessment committee. I provided pastoral care and customer service as an academic advisor. As a rural school, the pay and benefits were sufficient for a single faculty, living simply; however, I was getting married and wanted better for my new family, so I struck out for a better opportunity.

At Shantou University, I taught English writing and literature courses to second-language speakers from the entry university to MA levels. Additionally, I supervised multiple BA theses (a privilege for first-year faculty as students select their own supervisors). My work also included designing study abroad and plagiarism policies. While I very much enjoyed my time, health concerns required a return to the US.

At Palm Beach Atlantic, I taught professional and academic writing as well as some literature courses. I also sat on the Honors faculty (a distinct privilege) and was a leader in scholarly research. I began my career as an adjunct and was eventually moved into a half-time role (so full faculty status, but only a half-load for a half salary and no benefits). My colleagues were settled, and no full-time option was apparent. As I was young and without a family, I took an opportunity abroad for adventure.
