I developed and optimized protocols to isolate and label ultra-high molecular weight DNA from a variety of tissues for optical genomic mapping including blood, in vitro cell lines, and frozen tissues. Additionally, I tried to establish techniques to isolate high quality DNA from difficult tissues, such brain and advanced-stage tumors.

I helped write and manage research grants as well as sectioned, labeled, and imaged tissues. I worked on projects related to the immune system in neurodegenerative disease and cancer. Additionally, I participated in cloning AAV constructs to be used in gene knock-down screens.

As a Grant Writer / Scientist, I had broad responsibilities to help perform research/ development for new assays and to write grants to fund projects that could advance the diagnosis of kidney diseases. This involved identifying new funding announcements, synthesizing fundable project ideas, developing protocols and techniques, generating data, and writing grant applicaitons. Additionally, I conceptualized and performed the proof-of-principle experiments for a CRISPR/Cas-based in vitro genotyping assay to detect genetic variants linked to increased incidence of serious kidney disease. I also participated in a project to use animal models to identify biomarkers of kidney damage to develop reporter lines to detect nephrotoxic effects for toxicology screening.

I studied interactions between sensory axons and skin cells to better understand the molecular underpinings of the development of touch reception in vertebrates. This research required using genetic and small molecule-based knock-down methods to deduce which molecules were needed for skin cell-axon interactions. Additionally, I used confocal and scanning electron microscopy to characterize phenotypes.

My thesis work focused on the role of growth factor signaling during early brain development in zebrafish. Through the analysis of mutants, suppression of signaling using small molecules, and cell fate analysis, I found that Fgf signaling governs the differentialtion of a discrete population of neurons in the epithalamus. My work, both as primary researcher and through collaboration, produced four publications.
