Josh leads ACS by building interdisciplinary teams to tackle problems in novel ways. He founded ACS in 2006, which focuses on program design, sustainability science, and evaluation. Over the past 15 years, Josh has worked at the intersection of environmental conservation and policy, human behavioral change, design, entrepreneurism, and finance. Trained as a natural scientist, Josh holds a Ph.D. from Cornell University and an M.A. from the University of California. He has worked on environmental and social issues in over a dozen countries, including the management of invasive species, environmental restoration, conservation finance, and incentive-based approaches to environmental conservation. Josh has published over 90 scientific and public articles on environmental topics, some of which have received widespread media attention.His work in program design has included the design and implantation of environmental and capacity-building programs, including the Coastal Solutions Fellow Program, the Mingamar Program, and the Capital Azul Marine Refuge Program. In 2015, he published the book Proactive Strategies for Protecting Species, which is focused on designing pre-listing conservation programs in the United States. His work in sustainability science includes research on fisheries sustainability, invasive species, and increasing participation in voluntary conservation programs. Josh’s evaluation work includes serving as an Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Partner with the David & Lucile Packard Foundation, which has included several program evaluations exploring the links between capacity-building and shorebird conservation along the Pacific Americas Flyway. He has worked with multiple environmental foundations on strategy development and program evaluation. Josh also works on designing and improving networks to amplify and accelerate the work of conservation practitioners.Prior to ACS, Josh served as the Chief Scientist for Project Isabela (Galápagos Islands), one of the world’s largest island restoration project. He played a pivotal, early role in the NGO Island Conservation. Josh has held fellowships with the Fulbright Commission, Guggenheim Foundation, Kinship Foundation, Alcoa Foundation, the Copeland Fellowship in Global Sustainability at Amherst College, the Switzer Foundation, the Environmental Leadership Program, and the Smithsonian. He currently serves on the advisory boards of the Coastal Solutions Fellows Program, Capital Azul, Current Conservation, and Revive & Restore. He is a Research Fellow at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
