About Josh Duff
An enthusiastic early-career engineer who graduated with degrees in physics and mechatronics engineering at Monash University. Eager to gain more industry experience, and am interested in a diverse range of fields including scientific instrumentation electronics, optics and photonics, and renewable energies. I have a passion for applying my knowledge in these areas to the development of mechatronic systems. I have a breadth of knowledge within the fields of mathematics, physics, programming, engineering principles, and electronics design. Previous experience includes a system integration engineer role at Hyzon developing zero-emissions hydrogen fuel cell trucks, a junior engineering role in a precision laser technology company, a 3-month internship in a hydraulics manufacturing company, a summer research project in a quantum magnetometry lab, and electrical system design experience at the Monash Nova Rover (Robotics) student team.

Research Assistant - Experimental Magnetometry
CurrentWorking within the Monash School of Physics and Astronomy an an experimental physics lab. I am working in a first-year research fellowship position, but have not yet completed a PhD. I am working on the research and development of affordable nitrogen-vacancy centre-based magnetometers for vector field sensing applications.
System Integration Engineer
Responsible for integration of system modules in heavy fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). In the early stages of the company, this is primarily conducted on development vehicles.
Firmware Programmer / Junior Electronics Designer
In this role I worked to develop skills in electronic design and firmware programming, under the direct mentorship of senior engineers. I developed basic state machine firmware for new products using microcontrollers and displays. This required familiarising myself with internal libraries and programming structures. I used Altium Designer to design two internally used PCBs.
Undergraduate Research Project Assistant
A summer research project based in a quantum magnetometry lab. This was an eight-week project working alongside two other students and a supervisor. I became familiar with the scientific programming language Julia and using it to develop a data analysis technique. This required learning a lot mathematics, quantum mechanics, data analysis techniques, and computer programming concepts that were new to me. By the end of the eight weeks I was able to pass several working functions and data analysis visualizations to my team for further development, in the form of daily recorded lab notes and a Git repository.
2Nd Class Machinist
I worked as a part of a small quality control team inspecting hydraulic parts. I learned to program a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) to compare a wide range of internal and external parts against specified linear and geometric tolerances. I wrote and sent non-conformance reports to manufacturers for out-of-tolerance parts. I was responsible for the year’s calibration of workshop measurement tools such as micrometres, callipers, chrome thickness testers, surface testers, handheld chemical analyser etc... I ran oil cleanliness testing on the workshop's hydraulic oil dispenser 2-3 times weekly and created a report for in-house use.
Crew Trainer / Coach
I gained experience with customer service and problem-solving under pressure with customers whilst representing a business. I comfortably worked as a part of a larger team, both under leaders and in leadership roles. I was involved in the workplace safety team, which regularly met to discuss controlling hazards and enforcing safety procedures. As a part of my coaching role, I evaluated crew performance and wrote feedback reviews on crew weekly.
