Peterhead

District reporter for the 'North-East' area, covering politics, crime and a host of community issues.I covered the Aberdeenshire towns of Banff, Fraserburgh, Turriff and Peterhead, where I was based with a fellow reporter.My biggest stories to date have included The Queen's inaugural visit to the Turriff Show and the heart-rending story of an Aberdeenshire oil worker separated from his wife by Home Office red-tape. I also covered the disappearance of Fraserburgh man Shaun Ritchie which sparked the largest search operation and investigation in Police Scotland history.

Peterhead

As a member of a small editorial team I covered off-diary stories from Peterhead and across the Buchan area. This included everything from unearthing the North East’s first ‘false widow’ spider to speaking to Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg about the future of Peterhead’s carbon capture scheme.I built an extensive network of sources and contacts in the Buchan area as part of my daily news-gathering activities.Coverage of Aberdeenshire Council meetings and Peterhead Sheriff Court was chiefly been my responsibility since joining the Buchan Observer.As part of Johnston Press’s ‘Digital First’ strategy I helped spearhead the Buchan Observer’s web growth. Although we were a weekly publication, our target was to update the website at least five times per day. This included video content and packages.In lieu of a dedicated sports reporter, I took charge of the sports section of the paper and our in-depth coverage of Peterhead FC’s title-winning campaign had a positive impact on newspaper sales.Using the office camera, I was required to take photographs for all the stories I covered.

I played a key part in the small editorial team, writing copy for i-on Edinburgh and its sister publication i-on Glasgow, as well as the burgeoning i-on brand website.Proposed and carried forward a variety of glossy magazine features including profiles of Edinburgh-based musicians and an investigation into social businesses in the capital.Regular work included writing restaurant reviews and art exhibition previews.

Acted as the Student Representative for MSC Journalism, organising meetings with the students and communicating regularly with staff at Robert Gordon University. In this capacity I also acted as the University’s representative at the National Council for the Training of Journalists, attending the annual conference at Media City in Manchester.
