As a member of the University of Plymouth’s Learning Development & Peer Learning team, I joint coordinate the PALS and Writing Café Schemes, overseeing the day-to-day running and administration of these, with the aim of developing these established student-to-student support networks to maintain and grow the peer-support services provided at the university.In this role I draw on my insight as a recent graduate, and as a former mentor in the nationally recognised Writing Café, to help develop and deliver a student focused approach that feeds into the team’s wider role of providing student-centred academic support. These insights are shared with our current students through directly working with our peer mentors, supporting their development through PALS debriefs and working alongside them in the Writing Café, and through training and development opportunities. This enables our mentors to better aid the development of students’ academic abilities, and creates an open and accessible network of support for students that helps grow their confidence. My current role has seen my involvement with the successful merger of the PALS and Writing Café programmes under one team, supporting the organisation and running of both these schemes, the development of resources and programmes for our mentors, and the streamlining of administrative processes.
