Profile bio

About Josh Mcpherson

I am an electrochemist who is passionate about learning from experience and making a difference. My goal is to improve sustainability throughout the world and combat climate change. I am currently a post-bac intern at NREL researching polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) water electrolysis. I assemble cells and determine cell performance with EIS. Then, I use my self-developed MATLAB code to automatically process data, determine sources of overpotential, and produce plots. This fabrication and testing process is used to study differences in cell performance by varying cell area, temperature, and compression as well as determining the effects of NaCl, KCl, and CaCl2 on cell degradation and performance in cells with bipolar plates of different materials. This experience has inspired me to pursue research at the junction of chemistry and electrochemical engineering, at which materials science fits closely.I have experience in three different chemistry research labs. During my first experience with Dr. Bill Jones, I synthesized fused oxazolidine (FOX) ligands and developed skills in organic chemistry. I spent a summer with Dr. Jeffery Byers at Boston College synthesizing various UiO-66 metal-organic frameworks to study how functionalized linkers affect guest molecule encapsulation. The encapsulation studies were then used to study the recyclable use of Milstein's catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol in an effort to produce renewable energy. The rest of my undergraduate research, including my Bachelor's thesis, was spent with Dr. Ellen Matson in synthesizing and testing Mo3S4 cubane-type clusters for electrochemical properties for use in redox flow batteries. This system was optimized with different ligands, electrochemical parameters, solvents, electrolytes, and more. I am an ardent learner who strives to be the best I can at everything I do. I minor in psychology because I am fascinated by the human experience, and I also minor in Spanish because I find it important to be able to communicate with diverse groups of people. I have a background in videography, photography, and graphic design. Overall, I aim to be a balanced man with abilities as strong as my values.
