Over the summer, I spent a total of eight weeks working as a quantity surveyor with MiCiM. Meeting with clients and contractors, excellent communication skills were required, as well as good preparation and knowledge on the project; going through payment applications with package managers helped with this immensely. In my time with MiCiM, I used software such as Procore, Excel and Bluebeam, to undergo quantification and perform tasks such as measuring steelwork. I would receive quotes from sub-contractors and analysing contracts (usually JCT SBC) to perform cost checks on potential orders, as well as payment applications. Furthermore, I was responsible for producing and writing change order requests, issuing construction manager instructions and creating budget modifications while at the company. Finally, I also started my website during my time with MiCiM, writing about my experiences from the internship and what I learned whilst there and will continue this throughout university.

Spending six weeks during the summer (June-July) on a placement at Bouygues, working with Quantity Surveyors on projects such as the M4 and M25 J10 roadworks was very rewarding. At Bouygues, I undertook tasks such as completing compensation events, quantification, and schedules. This experience was incredibly insightful, and I learned a great deal regarding the profession.
