MGi is a temperature control specialist company based in Oxfordshire which operates all across the UK. My role as a temperature control apprentice was predominantly hands-on installation work where I had to work with my partner to systematically install air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Although not directly linked to chemical engineering, working closely with air conditioning gave me a practical insight into heat transfer and allowed me to consider non-traditional applications of the fundamentals I had learned at university. Installation projects varied during my time at MGi, from large corporate jobs to installations in the private sector, my experiences included running long pipe-runs between condenser units and the interior unit – often requiring strategic planning in order to avoid the unnecessary weak points of welded pipe. A significant amount of my time at MGi involved forward planning and physical problem solving. On larger systems an ideal pipe-run is required to ensure that the refrigerant transfer distance is not excessive to prevent the requirement of additional refrigerant charging. Working at MGi provided me with the opportunity to develop my small-team people skills and also to have a close interaction with important clients while representing the company.

With over 200 publications nationally, Newsquest is the second largest publisher of regional and local newspapers in the UK. My role as Telephone sales executive at Newsquest developed into more than the job title suggested due to my ability to manage time-sensitive deadlines successfully. I was responsible with managing parts of the Property and Motors advertising sections of a number of popular regional publications including the bestselling newspaper in Oxfordshire. This responsibility involved working as an integral member of a small team in order to manage the demand of large and small businesses across the county. In demonstrating my time-management skills and versatility, I also had a simultaneous secondary job role of telephone sales. I was tasked with selling advertising space in regional newspapers and feature magazines to small businesses. During my time at Newsquest, I continuously hit my increasing monthly sales target while also managing my time in the Property and Motors section. My highlight in this role was on a feature sales day, where I was awarded a bottle of champagne for earning the most profit across the entire sales floor.My experience at Newsquest has developed my ability to deal with high-pressure working environments where every day has a deadline. Working for a daily regional newspaper involves significant time-management skills and an ability to prioritise tasks in order to meet customer demands. I found that the intense exposure with small businesses and the general public developed my interpersonal and listening skills, which I have certainly found useful in various job roles and academic projects since.

At the Four Pillars Hotel I worked as a Conference & Banqueting Assistant and regularly supplied food and drinks for a range of functions, from wedding receptions to business awards ceremonies. Working as a Conference & Banqueting Assistant developed my interpersonal skills and my ability to work efficiently and effectively under pressure.
