Mechatronics Controls Engineer
Graduate Student Researcher
I am working with Virginia Tech and researchers from Memorial University of Newfoundland to create and control an updated state-space model that represents the dynamics of a non-contact mode atomic force microscope (AFM). This model works to convert the piezotube input voltages into mechanical structural dynamic forces with feedback controls to perform X-Y trajectory tracking and Z-axis non-contact mode for a stiff AFM cantilever.During the early stages of my research, I conducted research on various methods for controlling autonomous vehicle platoons in response to disturbances. I simulated a 4 vehicle cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) autonomous platoon in MATLAB and Simulink.
Graduate Teaching Assistant (Applied Electrical Theory)
I worked with the Electrical and Computer Engineering department by assigning and grading various labs that teach introductory electrical engineering circuit concepts for over 200 Mechanical Engineering undergraduate students.
Graduate Teaching Assistant (Ac Circuits Lab)
I assisted over 60 students by providing course feedback and hosting office hours to assess their circuits.
Software Engineer
I wrote and debugged over 40 automated Python tests in Visual Studio to reach near 90% code coverage. In an effort to effectively communicate my work, I documented over 60 pages worth of daily engineering decisions used in collaboration with other interns. For all of the code I wrote, I participated in code reviews to improve quality of code and learn about code reusability and best practices. I spent time researching various mobile networks to expand my problem domain knowledge.
Ece4805/Ece4806: Major Design Experience
Over two semesters, my fellow electrical engineering teammates and I researched, designed, and tested magnetic levitation suspension systems to hold a permanent magnet steady underneath an electro-magnetic solenoid.
Automation Researcher (Virginia Tech Score Program)
Through the Virginia Tech Summer Case Opportunity and Reflection Experience (SCORE) program, I worked with 5 other students to research, design, and present a new automated method for pulp bleaching. The SCORE program was designed to provide students with internship like experiences directly working with various different industries and perfect essential traits such as Teamwork, Communication, and Digital Fluency. For WestRock, our team divided our work to identify and determine potential areas to implement automation for their pulp bleaching process. We worked as a team to research how a pulp bleaching plant works and how key variables, such as brightness and pH, impact the final product. From this, I learned to draw instrumentation loop sheets in Solidworks Electrical to describe the installation of the devices our team decided to implement.
Undergraduate Student Researcher
With the Virginia Tech Industrial Systems and Engineering (ISE) department, I worked on researching industry 4.0 technologies with the Virginia Tech Learning Factory. As a project lead, I constructed a PLC controlled conveyor assembly line for ISE students to learn from. We worked with Siemens to determine PLC parts for the project. Along with this, I helped automate a mobile industrial robot (MiR) to follow a designated path around our workplace. We programmed data extraction code for a Haas CNC Mill in Python for our team to remotely monitor conditions.
Core Product Engineer Research And Development
I worked on researching new factory machine methods for Altria products. I worked with electrostatic technology and inspection systems to assist my team in understanding how these technologies operate. I've built multiple bench-top prototypes with 80/20 aluminium parts and made models in Inventor to 3D print onto these prototypes. Elaborate test plans and evaluation reports were written to organize my work and schedule for the projects to provide documentation for my team's records. This experience allowed me to shape new understandings of a research and development role, grow communication and technical skills, and deliver results with new technologies I have never encountered before.
Retainer Construction Intern
I worked with the small business to learn the process for making retainers for orthodontists around the Richmond area. Focused on working with my hands to precisely bend the aluminum wires around the molds of teeth sent in from orthodontists. I made an entire retainer myself by bending the wires, mixing polymers, pressurizing it, filing it down, and polishing it. I also helped move his company from his garage into an office building in Richmond, Virginia at the end of the summer.
