OSAC is part of an initiative by NIST and the Department of Justice to strengthen forensic science in the United States. The organization is a collaborative body of more than 500 forensic science practitioners and other experts who represent local, state, and federal agencies; academia; and industry. NIST has established OSAC to support the development and promulgation of forensic science consensus documentary standards and guidelines, and to ensure that a sufficient scientific basis exists for each discipline.NIST named the initial members of 23 forensic science subcommittees on Oct. 29, 2014. These forensic science subcommittees will develop and vet documents (standards, guidelines, code of practice) for approval through the Scientific Area Committees and Forensic Science Standards Board.
Member, Committee E30 On Forensic Sciences
CurrentASTM Committee E30 on Forensic Sciences was formed in 1970. E30 meets once a year, in February, with about 125 members attending two days of meetings. The Committee, with a current membership of approximately 685, has jurisdiction of 51 standards, published in the Annual Book of ASTM Standards, Volume 14.02. E30 has 10 technical subcommittees that maintain jurisdiction over these standards. These standards have and continue to play a preeminent role in all aspects to forensic sciences, including criminalistics, questioned documents, forensic engineering, fire debris analysis, drug testing analysis, and collection and preservation of physical evidence.
