I lead a cluster of nationally and internationally recruited scientists across South East Asia, South Asia, and Eastern and Southern Africa dedicated to the development of high yielding, disease resistant, and high quality varieties of irrigated lowland varietal rice. I organize and develop capacity building efforts at regional NAREs (National Agricultural Research and Extension) agencies in rice-growing countries to increase their rates of genetic gain and optimize their costs. To this end, I lead international collaborative projects involving NAREs, other international research institutes, universities, and private companies through public-private partnerships. I’m also responsible for coordinating all international projects related to intensive/irrigated systems into a unified mission oriented research theme within the institute and across IRRI, CIAT, and AfricaRice through Flagship 5 of the RICE CRP.

Development and execution of a modernized breeding system that integrates breeding strategy with enabling technologies in order to develop high yielding, disease resistant inbred rice varieties with good grain quality for South Asia and Eastern and Southern Africa. I also work collaboratively across the CG, IRRI, and our NARES partners on projects of mutual benefit that enable each of us to better accomplish our mandates and ensure a sustainable and profitable future for rice farmers globally.

I work closely with the rice product development team to help develop, optimize, and deploy hybrid breeding methods that are aligned with the global hybrid crops breeding strategy at DuPont Pioneer. In this role, I also act as a key scientific collaborator between the rice breeding organization in Asia Pacific and other discovery and enabling technology groups globally.Much of my responsibility is the optimization and deployment of strategies for precision phenotyping, advanced molecular breeding, germplasm characterization, and pre-breeding activities in India specifically and collaboratively across the Asia Pacific region.

As part of the Breeding Technologies department I conducted targeted experiments in collaboration with the hybrid rice breeding teams in India and the Philippines to inform hybrid rice breeding strategy. I also served as the primary link between rice product development in Asia and enabling technology groups in North America.
