Engineering Intern, Gas and Facilities Division, Liquefied Natural Gas Group• Performed computer simulations using natural gas well modeling software to forecast the potential future deliverability of several wells located at the La Barge, WY well field. Delivered a recommendation based on the developed models that upsizing the well-bore tubing in several existing wells would reliably supply the additional gas required for a processing facility upgrade. Recommendations were followed and deliverability met or exceeded expectations resulting in a total cost savings exceeding $100 million over the alternative plan of drilling several new wells.• Learned industry standards and practices for natural gas exploration, production, transport and sales.

Engineering Intern, Baton Rouge Polyolefins, Polypropylene Division• Designed and implemented changes to a powder transport step in the production process resulting in increased plant cleanliness, improved air quality, and decreased employee health and safety concerns.• Designed improved methods for presenting plant operators with graphical information based on functionality and human-machine interaction considerations. Engineering Intern, Mechanical and Materials Engineering Division, Mechanical and Fluids Engineering Department, Flow Measurement Group • Worked with industry experts in natural gas metering and sampling techniques on various consulting and research projects at the Gas Research Institute’s Metering Research Facility (operated by SwRI). • Conducted a design review of a crude-oil metering skid and prover for pipeline custody-transfer metering in Mexico.• Developed fluid-mechanical models to predict liquid droplet ingestion into gas sampling probes under two-phase flow conditions.

Engineering Intern, Merck Manufacturing Division • Applied models and theory of industrial crystallization to determine what was causing the high rate of failure of reworked batches of product. Batches of product commonly failed final purity tests, but by FDA mandate they were only allowed to be reworked once. Recommended modified operating procedures for rework batches based on model predictions that resulted in improved second-pass approval rate and increased plant productivity.• Developed and taught training courses for plant operators to acquaint them with new operating procedures following an extended factory shutdown for maintenance and system upgrades.• Gained experience in pharmaceutical manufacturing through projects focusing on process improvement and analysis of daily operations, trending and analyzing process data, and assisting engineers in large factory-wide projects.
