About Josh Denney
Since 2022, I have been building from the ground up and leading a government relations function for Western Alliance Bank while assisting in the longer-term creation of a corporate affairs group (to also include community relations, corporate comms, and our foundation). GR components include Congressional relations, regulatory relations, state relations, a corporate PAC, trade association engagement, and a grassroots/voter education program. Western Alliance is a $80+ billion in assets regional bank and top five mortgage company with branches and offices in 14 states, and customers across the country. Ranked 704, WAL is a Fortune 1000 company. Previously, I was head of federal government affairs for BBVA where I had the opportunity to represent a top 40 global universal bank (Grupo BBVA), a top 40 U.S. bank (BBVA USA), the first U.S. neobank (Simple), and other fintech subsidiaries, before Democrat and Republican Senators and Members of Congress, the administration, regulatory agencies, and industry associations. While based and focused on the U.S., the job included significant cross-border coordination and consideration of global policy issues. For two years, I was the U.S. Chairman of the Trans-Atlantic Business Council. I was previously Vice President of Public Policy at the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) where I managed a team of policy experts on residential mortgage issues, developed the Association’s positions, and represented the interests of the MBA’s member companies before federal agencies and executive branch officials. I previously served as the Association’s liaison with members of the U.S. Senate and lead lobbyist on commercial and multifamily mortgage issues. Prior to joining MBA, I was Staff Director of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee’s Subcommittee on International Trade and Finance and Legislative Assistant to then Senator Chuck Hagel. I advised the Senator on financial, economic, and commerce issues, including banking, housing, transportation, taxes, the federal budget, and the postal service. I also served as the Senator’s chief spokesperson with the national news media in 2002.I have a master’s degree in political management from The George Washington University (GWU), and two bachelor’s degrees -- one in political science and one in corporate communication and public affairs -- from Southern Methodist University (SMU). I enjoy spending time with my family, volunteering on several nonprofit boards, and swimming for exercise and competition.
