About Dr. Josh Elmore

A survey by Egon Zehnder revealed that only 30% of executives receive formal support when transitioning into a new role - support that typically includes practical arrangements, office/supplier/customer visits, or peer introductions. Yet, even within this group, over 80% expressed a need for more: guidance on internal networks and politics, insights into organizational culture, constructive feedback, and a deeper understanding of team dynamics. For the 70% of leaders who receive no formal onboarding support, the challenge is even greater. Together, this leaves the vast majority of leaders navigating critical aspects of their new roles - relationships, politics, culture, feedback, and team dynamics - entirely on their own.I am committed to addressing this gap. My approach combines two key elements:1. What the fortunate 30% already receive:Ensure the foundational aspects of onboarding - logistics, stakeholder meetings, etc. - are executed seamlessly.2. What almost 100% of leaders are missing: Tailored consultation to excel in the areas that matter most: building strong relationships, navigating politics, clarifying goals, understanding organizational context, cultivating continuous feedback, and integrating with the team and organization. With a proven framework and years of experience supporting leaders, I have helped clients onboard effectively, thrive in their roles, and even receive promotions. If you're stepping into a new role and want to navigate this critical transition with clarity and confidence, let's connect.I've also helped:🙏 Program and facilitate executive offsites🤝 Enable organization transformation through employee/leader collaboration💪 Strengthen DE&I initiatives🔬 Enhance leader understanding of remote employee engagement 📈 Improve team communication and performance 🤯 Increase user adoption of new IT software🌱 Nurture professional developmentI like to think of my practice as organization development coaching - helping leaders navigate their roles, build great teams, and lead successful organizations.

CSC is my fourth company - it's my solo consulting practice - what all my past work has led to - where I put science to work. For almost 10 years, I've been consulting to organizations - with mentors, partners, associates, and on my own. Every day, I get up with my clients in mind - their challenges are my challenges - the books and articles I read, the research I do, what I write, and the products and services I build, start and end with their challenges. My work is rooted in thought partnership with leaders - helping them examine, understand, and makes update to be more effective.

I'd been facilitating offsites for about a year when Lauren Pearl, a colleague and business strategist, approached me about a client that wanted to include team building in addition to strategic planning at their offsite. We decided to partner on the engagement and what came out was pure magic - we saw the power of expertise on both the business and people side of the offsite. We came away inspired to build upon that insight - so, we founded Pearl & Elmore, specifically to develop and deliver high value offsites. Our thesis is that a focus on outcomes yields high value programming and gets the team talking about what matters. To achieve this work, we partner with Executive Assistants and Chiefs of Staff as they are strategic partners who make these events possible. While working with Lauren, I've learned that great products are built through customer insights, that there is power in cross-discipline collaboration, and that offsites can be strategic levers for driving results and organization change.

I'd been attending ODNY since 2018 - for an organization that's been around since 1967, that's not too long. However, over time, I've come to learn the power of professional community. During the pandemic, ODNY hit a rough patch and programming slowed down. But a newly configured board brought the organization back to life in 2023. I attended their first in-person event since the pandemic and found a group of thoughtful and inquisitive practitioners. As the year went on, I continued to engage, attending events, and sharing my thoughts on programming. In 2024, I was honored to be invited to join the board and contribute formally to the re-imagining of an organization with a long and rich history. As an association, we enjoy co-creating a place to explore all things organization development, to engage our colleagues, and to never stop learning. So far, I've learned more about board governance, non-profit leadership, event planning, professional development, and the power of a small group of motivated individuals.

I consider teaching to be a core part of my professional responsibilities. Sharing what I've learned and continue to observe as a practitioner is a critical function for training new entrants to the field. The activity challenges me to stay current, read broadly, and communicate effectively. As a professor, I've learned that there is always more to learn and we are enriched when we bring others with us. At my alma mater, I've taught the courses People Analytics and Understanding Behavioral Research at the graduate-level.

As part of my post-PhD journey, I've been exploring the professor role. I was fortunate to join the social science department at CityTech to design and teach their course on Personnel and Organizational Psychology at the undergraduate-level. During this semester, I was reminded of the magical moment when I discovered the field of organizational psychology - teaching the introduction to the field as I had learned it in 2015 was an honor and a great reminder of what we can learn when we return to the beginning.
  • Mediabrands
    Talent Insights & Analytics Partner
    Mediabrands Jul 2021 - Jul 2022
    New York, Ny, Us
After SuperFunky, I thought it would be valuable to see how people analytics gets built and delivered internally. I joined Mediabrands as part of a small team dedicated to HR analytics. I was entrusted as an internal consultant to help various internal agencies conduct new research and leverage the people data that we had integrated and organized for insight. I built a global listening survey for an organization of 10,000+, trained HRBPs to use a new analytics tool, conducted focus groups to inform a campaign promoting the employee value proposition, and partnered with leaders to communicate insights about their agencies. I learned a great deal here, particularly how to effectively partner with leaders, how to prioritize projects, and the massive value of organized people data.
  • Superfunky
    Co-Founder & Ceo
    Superfunky Aug 2020 - Jul 2021
SuperFunky was my second company and first pursuit after graduating with my PhD. It was an idea for an on-demand HR analyst - people metrics delivered via natural language questions on a Slack app. We were a bit too early as LLMs (like OpenAI) at the time could not analyze complex data. Today, several people analytics software firms are leveraging natural language to analytics capabilities - I encourage you to check out Visier and One Model as examples. Here I learned about start-up co-founder partnership, venture funding, enterprise sales, artificial intelligence, product development, start-up operations, and many many more things related to launching a start-up.
  • Hr Research, Llc
    Owner And Consultant
Hr Research, Llc May 2019 - Aug 2020
HR Research, LLC was my first company - through this entity I subcontracted on organization development projects, provided executive coaching services, and consulted with teams to help them understand their dynamics and become more effective. My first solo consulting firm, foreshadowing my current focus.
  • Teachers College, Columbia University
    Research Scientist
Teachers College, Columbia University Sep 2016 - Aug 2020
    New York, New York, Us
I engaged in research throughout my time as a doctoral student. The social-organizational program is unique in that they encourage students to gain advisement from many faculty members. I was fortunate to be advised by Caryn Block, Elissa Perry, Bill Pasmore, Debra Noumair, Bryan Keller, and Alex Bowers and learn from many other faculty members. In addition, I collaborated with and was inspired by the work of my fellow doctoral students. This was a moment of deep enrichment and self-development. I deployed full research cycles and pursued projects studying topic modeling, gender bias in hiring practices, group dynamics and personality in virtual teams, and assessment design and validation. This is where I learned how to learn.
  • Teachers College, Columbia University
    Program Liaison - Social-Organizational Psychology
Teachers College, Columbia University Jul 2019 - Jun 2020
    New York, New York, Us
The doctoral program is rich in opportunity for being involved in the community. During my time in the program, I was fortunate to serve as the doctoral liaison. In this role, I facilitated new doctoral student on-boarding, authored a new program guide, negotiated for student resources, and acted as a program representative for prospective students. I learned the value of being a conduit between parties, what it means to represent other's interests, and the value of involvement.
  • Teachers College, Columbia University
Graduate Assistant - Executive Masters In Change Leadership
Teachers College, Columbia University Jul 2019 - Jun 2020
    New York, New York, Us
Another wonderful opportunity to serve and learn in the program. The Executive Masters is a one-year intensive for working professionals to learn, practice, and lead change. Over the course of the year, we gathered for four in-person modules - intense days of focused learning and engaging. As graduate assistant, I was fortunate to work with insightful and inspiring students at the forefront of their industries and luminary faculty in the world of organizational development. I learned what it meant to develop and curate thoughtful lessons, interactive programming, and how to pivot in real-time depending on what the group needed. Here, I learned how to be a facilitator.
  • Teachers College, Columbia University
    Teaching Assistant - Social-Organizational Psychology
Teachers College, Columbia University Aug 2017 - Jul 2019
    New York, New York, Us
No doctoral program can be complete without the opportunity to engage in course development and delivery. As a teaching assistant, I helped prepare course materials, graded course work, and guided students on course content. Here I learned how to teach, what it means to be a professor, and the importance of adult learning.

This is kind of a wild story - my ADP gig came from holding up a sign in Wall St (see photo)! In the summer between my first and second year as a PhD student, I knew I needed an internship. However, I didn’t really know where to start. I was walking around New York, looking at all the big buildings, trying to figure out how I could land a job in one. I found myself in the Wall Street area during the lunch rush. There were hundreds of people on the sidewalk, all dressed for office jobs. I thought to myself, if only these people knew that I could be helpful, they might give me a chance. So, I walked to a nearby Staples store, bought a poster board and a Sharpie marker, and wrote “Human Resources INTERN AVAILABLE.” I walked right back to that corner where I had seen all those people and held up that sign. To my surprise, quite a few people stopped by to chat, and within the same afternoon, I landed a few conversations – one of which turned into a gig in ADP's venture studio (actually in the building to the left in the photo). The studio happened to be working on an automated coaching program and my expertise in organizational psychology was well-suited for supporting product development. There, I learned what internal innovation looks like, how software products get developed, how science can help, the value of user testing, and what it looks like to be an internal entrepreneur (or intrapreneur).
  • Veritas Partners Llc
    Change Management Consultant
Veritas Partners Llc Jan 2018 - May 2018
Spring of 2018 could be called "Josh's Introduction to Organization Development." I was fortunate to be the Teaching Assistant to the late Celeste Coruzzi, a distinguished consultant and professor, for a course on organization dynamics. Celeste must have seen something in me because she pretty quickly invited me to join her on a consulting engagement. I learned a great from Celeste, both in the classroom and in the executive suite. She illustrated relationship building with executives, engagement crafting, coaching, how to present, and how to truly partner with a client. I was treated like a colleague and given latitude to contribute - it was where I learned what thought partnership meant. Thank you Celeste.
  • Kingsbridge Heights Community Center
    Change Management Consultant
Kingsbridge Heights Community Center Jan 2018 - May 2018
    Bronx, Us
Once at Columbia, I was provided opportunities to practice organizational psychology - this engagement was part of a practicum course, taught by Bill Pasmore, a pioneer in organization development. As part of an ongoing effort, myself and a team of nine students pursued a change initiative with Kingsbridge. We collaborated with organizational leaders over the course of the semester, enlisted change agents, educated staff, held workshops, & fed back data to leadership. I learned a lot about change, teaming, and how critical factors like time, investment, commitment, and partnership impact change success.

The Greater Good Science Center Jan 2015 - May 2016

I love writing - the GGSC gave me a space not only write, but to think critically about current research. As a research assistant, I was tasked with performing monthly literature reviews on the topics of empathy, compassion, and altruism. As a contributor, I wrote articles highlighting meaningful findings from this research. This experience helped me develop muscle for translating research to practice and communicating the science to a broad audience.
  • University Of California, Berkeley
    Research Assistant
University Of California, Berkeley Jan 2015 - May 2016
    Berkeley, Ca, Us
Studying at Berkeley afforded me great opportunities to join psychology research labs and learn how to conduct experiments. As a research assistant, I facilitated research protocols for in-person experiments, performed literature reviews for academic articles, and coded data from fMRI and video output. I learned what it meant to bring rigor to learning - this experience informed both my senior thesis and my initial research orientation as a doctoral student.
  • Netsuite
    Human Resources Intern
    Netsuite May 2015 - Jul 2015
    Austin, Tx, Us
My first gig in the people space - that summer I took an intro course in industrial-organizational psychology and was fortunate to pair the class with this internship. I travelled across the bay from Berkeley to San Mateo each day (bike, train, bike) to put science to work. I was tasked with understanding the experience of field sales agents - who worked remotely - something many of us are now familiar with. I designed and deployed surveys, spoke with agents directly, and organized the data to understand their experience and identify strengths and weaknesses of job engagement. These insights allowed me to develop an informed program to better engage remote field agents, which I presented to the CHRO. This opportunity, to investigate a people challenge, gain unique insight, and shape a recommendation offered a glimpse of what was ahead - it contributed to my decision to pursue a PhD.
