- In this volunteer Board position, I worked with the NPA staff to understand our operational processes to identify novel ways to lower our costs and maintain the same (or better) service to the NPA staff and membership. These efforts payed off as the NPA experienced a 58% increase in annual budget for the past fiscal year. - I also served as the NPA's Treasurer from 2016 to the end of 2020. Another area of focus for me was to increase the NPA's revenue by 1) growing membership (overall membership more than doubled during my Board term) and 2) enhancing non-member revenue which increased by >50% in 2020 though efforts such as: NPA Job Board, selling advertising, sponsorship, and strategic revenue sharing partnerships with affiliate organizations. - As a member of the Strategic Planning Committee, I participated in drafting the NPA's 2018-2020 Strategic Plan using the Theory of Change approach. This required the ability to envision the NPAs needs today and in the future and to develop a detailed implementation plan and a prioritized task list that feeds up to the NPA's goals and imperatives which align to the overarching Plan.

- I lead and coordinated efforts of 35 dedicated and matrixed personnel to provide program management, risk management, medical, scientific, regulatory affairs, manufacturing, and DoD acquisition skills in support of Federal Government-funded drug development efforts to private industry - In addition to managing a team of consultants, I directly provided strategic planning, risk analysis, and operational support to DoD senior executives on a $100M Research and Development Test and Evaluation budget. Highlights during my tenure included: six successful Investigational New Drug (IND) filings with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), three drug candidates in Phase I clinical trials, one drug candidate receiving FDA “fast track” status, and several bio-threat scenario exercises involving domestic government laboratories and US troops in Korea - Another one of my more enjoyable and creative roles was to work with the strategic communications team to develop brand identity, showcase program achievements to stakeholders, develop a meaningful social media presence, and develop collaborations with industry partners- I naturally pay attention to detail and hold myself and my team to high standards. As such, I drafted a Quality Assurance Quality Control (QA QC) Plan to establish best practices for all team members to understand client requests and to deliver products and intellectual material to the client that met their desired requirements, with superior quality, by the deadline stated. Missing one deadline or failing to meet a prescribed requirement will kill a client's trust and I never let that happen. I served as the QA QC manager for this particular contract- Lastly, I conducted additional responsibilities as the contract Program Manager to include personnel functions and contract financial management as part of overall Team Leader function and corporate business development and proposal writing

- I was responsibility for scientific discovery and portfolio management of physician initiated clinical studies for the West and Northwest regions of Medtronic’s Cardiac Rhythm Disease Management (CRDM) business unit. This was like a "mini NIH" study section where we met biweekly to review proposals and fund the most exciting and innovative research to improve our products and product utility on behalf of patients- One of my greatest assets was to develop peer relationships with physicians and Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) and engaged them in scientific dialogue about relevant publications, Medtronic clinical trial data, and physician research interests with the goal to focus discussions toward Medtronic product strategies. These relationships led to collaborative study designs, successful budget negotiations, and direct insight to users of our devices - I was exceptionally skilled at scientific project management and was responsible for a portfolio of 20 ongoing clinical trials focused on improving patient care and expanding market share with Medtronic CRDM products and therapies. My studies ran on time, remained within budget and provided meaningful data to both the doctor and Medtronic on how to use and improve our devices- I developed and used my diplomacy skills and routinely tested my customer relationships by being a sole conduit to my physician researchers when I reviewed customer research proposals for scientific approach, novelty, and alignment to Medtronic’s strategic goals with a funding rate of ~10%. At the completion of review meetings, I communicated the funding outcomes directly to investigators. It was a challenge to deliver negative outcomes while maintaining my relationship with these physician/researchers and encourage them to continue to use our products- I actively managed protocol development, legal and regulatory review, budget negotiation, internal stakeholder assessment, data analysis, and publication strategy for funded studies

- I reported directly to the Undersecretary of Defense for Laboratories and Basic Sciences and served as the Army Research Office (ARO) Director's liaison to the Director Defense Research and Engineering (DDR&E) Director for Research, representing ARO, Army Research Laboratory and Army basic research interests in DDR&E - I was responsible for program development and oversight for the DoD's basic science program and participated in working groups with counterparts from the Office of Naval Research, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and other DoD agencies and staff to align research efforts, fund necessary and novel research, and plan for the technologies needed by the Warfighter for years to come - My major project was to make groundbreaking efforts to reformulate DoD basic research portfolio metrics and updated DoD research and development strategic planning. This was an agency wide effort that required significant buy-in from the Service stakeholders. This project was deemed a huge success as my evaluation strategy was used during the 2006 basic research program review to evaluate the DoD basic research porfolio - I was the DoD lead for managing the Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (Budget $25M FY2006) and other defense-wide funding programs out of the Office of the Secretary of Defense - Some additional assignments included Defense representation on Federal interagency and Congressional working groups, committees and activities primarily to support National defense research interests

- Once I completed my PhD program, I was invited to conduct a follow-on project in a collaborator's lab to examine the proteome of skeletal muscle tissue in a rabbit model. I had to enhance an old protocol to fractionate and characterize the full complement of proteins found in rabbit soleus muscle and then identify them using mass spectrometry. - I had a small window of time to complete this work before I started my AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellowship and in only 6 months I was able to conduct this research, collect and analyze the data and publish my results in Molecular & Cellular Proteomics.
