In design critiques Josh gave well-rounded, strengths-based feedback, always pointing out what was strong and effective about a design as well as what could be improved; as the team grew over the years and eventually outgrew a single meeting time for all design critiques, we still had that foundation that Josh modeled for giving well-rounded feedback. That positive culture that Josh created around design critiques is just one example of the many ways that he worked so hard to nurture and strengthen the relationships on the design team. Josh created a culture that was encouraging and inclusive, and it made coming to work each day feel exciting and meaningful. Josh also helped me to understand and articulate my own strengths when we worked together at Axon. It wasn’t until years later that I fully understood the importance of developing early on that vocabulary for describing where I excel in my own design process. As a young designer just starting out, Josh’s mentorship during those years (and in the years since!) helped me to trust my point of view as a designer, and to advocate for user-centered problem solving on every team I’ve been a part of since.
