In December 2004, I graduated from the University of Wisconsin in Madison with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Communication Arts. Discover Mediaworks hired me right out of school to be their Machine Room Technician, to perform basic video editing and media duplication. However, I demonstrated very quickly that I had the necessary skills to do much more, so the owners added all company proofreading and closed captioning to my list of responsibilities.I moved to Portland, Oregon in August 2007, and took on an administrative position at the Pacific University College of Education. While in this position, I pushed our department to reach out in bigger and better ways to our academic community. The highlight of this push was our “Wednesday Weekly” electronic newsletter, which I produced and for which I wrote a weekly column. It was very popular within our department, and even with our alumni.When I moved back to Milwaukee in early 2011, I began working as an Account Executive for The Onion and also as a freelance copywriter. These roles allowed me to strategize, to sharpen my sales skills, to write for a variety of clients, and to establish relationships with new friends and organizations. The Milwaukee Onion office closed at the end of 2013, and I worked in New Business Development for AFFIRM (formerly Staples Marketing) through December 2015. In January 2016, I accepted the Director of Advertising role at Milwaukee Record and have been enjoying that role ever since. I also freelance as a marketing consultant as time allows, working on projects for a variety of clients in areas such as writing, social media, and closed captioning.
