Josh founded TACTILE in 1999, as a high-touch product and UX design consultancy where the creative, technical, and strategic come together to design meaningful physical and digital experiences for everyday moments and the one of a kind. Based in downtown Seattle Washington, TACTILE balances a highly strategic design offering while staying grounded in the practical aspects of real world product development. After working at design consultancies and startups, Josh went solo, focusing on consumer technology, games, and medical products. He started TACTILE with clients that include Microsoft, Disney, Milwaukee tools, GE, Panasonic, Intel, and Samsung, Josh and his team have welcomed the opportunity to design and develop innovative equipment and devices. Under Josh’s leadership TACTILE has flourished, expanding its skillset to accommodate increasingly diverse clients that provide medical, consumer medical, and “greater good” products and services. Josh continues to guide his team in designing unique products that will have a lasting impact on both clients and consumers.

Founder And PrincipalTactileSeattle, Wa, Us -
Founder/ PrincipalTactile Sep 2002 - PresentSeattle, Wa, UsAt Tactile, Relationships matter the most to us and for over 15 years, we’ve partnered with influential and emerging brands to craft industrial, medical and consumer products with lasting relevance. When it comes to design, we believe that practical and enjoyable are not mutually exclusive. Details should be purposeful and nuanced, never gratuitous. We’ve developed a culture where industrial designers, interaction designers, graphic designers, and engineers create sought-after products and experiences through research and strategy. Our collaborative approach to interactive design and product development provides layers of insight throughout each step of the design process. With a foundation of empathy, each project starts with doing the hard work of building and understanding relationships and ends with a product that works and is desirable for everyone. We’re in search of projects with a cause; not just next year’s model, but something that aims to deliver a new experience, improve a life, make a job easier, help someone get well or allow someone to have more fun not just for the first hour, but for the long haul. We want to design things that matter. It’s what we excel at because it’s what we’re passionate about. -
PrincipalJmk Industrial Design Jan 1999 - 2002I started consulting on my own after leaving Fiori with a desire to be more hands-on and more integrated with technical teams. I wanted to focus on building a design process that was truly collaborative with engineering and took the end-user AND the client's business goals to heart. I balanced 2-3 clients at a time and worked a mix of in-house and in my own studio for a few years. By working with a few Seattle tech firms, I learned that I really thrived on the practical aspects of design and how beautiful form language is really derived from methodically reasoned function. At a time when design was seen as just a last step of decoration, I learned how to elevate the understanding of design’s true value within the walls of these companies. These successes lead me to open my firm Tactile, hire some great designers and begin working for larger clients.

Senior DesignerFiori Product Development Sep 1997 - Sep 1999I was a Senior designer in a boutique industrial design and mechanical engineering firm working on design concepts for high end computer system for Intel, exercise equipment for companies like Precor, home healthcare design work for Sonicare and mass market products for Starbucks. I was also tasked with concept and design development for many tech startup companies in the consumer electronics and sporting goods industries and even some helmet mounted display flight gear. My design process relied heavily on sketching and I ended my time at Fiori with some solid CAD skills.

Industrial DesignerVirtual I-O 1996 - 1998As a designer at Virtual I/O (VIO) I got a taste of the tech startup scene. I conceptualized next generation head mounted display products, for potential development and in some cases for inspiration of what the future of VR gear could be. The combination of complex ergonomics and the clash of tech and fashion made the work very challenging and interesting. Along the way, I watched the company boom and fall and learned a ton about both design and business. It was a fantastic sandbox for a designer and a virtual MBA all rolled into one.

DesignerHiemstra Design May 1995 - Sep 1995My Time at Hiemstra was spent working on medical equipment and high performance computing hardware. This small office was a great place to learn during my early design career.

DesignerAmerican Tourister (Now Samsonite) Jan 1994 - May 1995During my short time at Samsonite, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to design an entire line of hard-side luggage for the American Tourister brand. This was the first time something I lead the design of was produced in its entirety. The end result was well received, sold well and lasted on the market for a long time. I learned to work within the confines of a traditional industry while having success introducing some new processes.
-
DesignerContinuum Sep 1993 - Dec 1994Boston, Ma, UsI worked on multiple project teams, built models, sketched concepts and assisted the designers with all aspects of the design process. I was involved with the design of medical equipment, consumer electronics, and services. This place was so inspiring, the designers were so generous with their time and I am still in touch with many of the people I worked with today. I can’t imagine a better design community to kick off a design career.
