As the son of an Ethiopian immigrant and African American, I’m inspired by those who sacrificed more than I ever could – purposing my 4 years at the University of Washington to use eclectic avenues to provide youth the same STEM exposure I’ve been afforded followed by three years of diabetes and health disparities research at the NIH. My experiences have shaped me into a globally-minded citizen fully-equipped to impact the world. As an aspiring physician scientist, I’ll push the bounds of medicine to ameliorate health disparities as I actively inspire the next generation of health professionals to do the same!

Selected by Undergraduate Academic Affairs at the University of Washington to participate in a story-telling opportunity about the breath and depth of the student experience. We engage fully in the world by asking questions about it. It’s through questions that we begin to think about issues more deeply and understand problems more completely. Undergraduates’ questions may be powerful scientific questions; important social questions; they may be equally child-like, inspired by sheer wonder, but with a complexity underlying their outward simplicity. Through questions, students embrace a boundless curiosity about the world we live in, our role and responsibility in it, and our journey through it.Throughout their experiences, UW undergraduates have been challenged by a broad set of views and perspectives on a wide range of topics, and they have learned to think critically about them. As thousands of our students graduate, we wanted to share some questions of a few graduating seniors who have lived the breadth and depth of the Husky Experience.

Selected as one of 18 students to participate in Psychology Chile study abroad.I signed up for “Psychology Chile” Early Fall Start because the trip provided me a means to expand my knowledge about how healthcare is practiced in a setting outside of the United States. The study abroad accomplished this by providing a framework to juxtapose Chile’s private, public, and indigenous healthcare practices. However, to say that the only thing I walked away with was an enhanced understanding of healthcare would be an understatement! Throughout the 31-day journey, not only did I gain insight from the perspective of knowledgeable healthcare professional, but I was immersed into vibrant music, delectable food, warm families; and thus, I discovered more about myself. Over the month-long journey, I learned about Chile’s healthcare systems, the country’s unique culture, and the combination of the two cultivated my personal and developmental growth.

Acquired the following skills in carrying out an experiment to create recombinant DNA molecules inserting foreign DNA into a plasmid via various molecular cloning techniques:In one of my projects, I used these techniques to utilize a plasmid containing mcherry and successfully cloned a TagBFP in place of the mcherry marker. This allowed a post doctorate in the lab to now better visualize cancerous cells with this blue (TagBFP) marker as the cells progressed throughout the cell cycle. "The Paddison Lab uses functional genomics to probe the underlying biology of mammalian stem and progenitor cells. Our primary goal is to define the biological units of self-renewal, expansion, and lineage commitment in model stem cell systems, including: embryonic stem cells, hematopoietic stem cells, neural progenitor cells, and brain tumor initiating cells (i.e., brain tumor stem cells). We are particularly interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms that allow stem cells to maintain their unique identity and developmental potential." http://research.fhcrc.org/paddison/en.html

Cambridge Academy - Offers an international, pre-university curriculum and examination system that emphasizes the value of a broad and balanced study for academically able students. It aims to encourage the skills of independent search and investigation, the use of initiative and creativity, and the application of knowledge and skills. The Cambridge Preparatory Academy is a rigorous program which provides students the opportunity to challenge themselves in a rigorous curriculum. Five out of six of my classes were Cambridge since my freshman year of high school. This heavy work load balanced with competitive varsity basketball and track teams taught me to have a university level work-ethic. My Biology class specifically emphasized a keen level of specificity. It was thought provoking but all the while fascinating. Now I plan to use my foundation and passion for biology to pursue a degree of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Washington.
