A Service and Interaction Designer with interests in design methodologies, end to end design processes, participatory design practices, systems design and a love for information visualization. I enjoy many phases of design but especially love the moments where insights from research are transformed in to novel and elegant solutions.

FarmhandFuturefarmers Jul 2000 - PresentI came to San Francisco in 2000 to work with Amy Franceschini at Futurefarmers, www.futurefarmers.com. We became collaborative partners on many commercial and personal projects. At Futurefarmers we followed an endless regimen of creative experimentation interrupted only for explosions of breakdancing and discussions about composting. We aimed to cultivate consciousness and in the process made many beautiful community websites, Flash games, information visualizations, and applications. Our clients included Swatch/HP, MTV, and EMI.Some of our personal projects included www.communiculture.org, comix colab, and www.theyrule.net.They Rule is a Flash based web application that lets users browse through the interlocking directories of Fortune 500 companies. They can arrange and annotate the data and save it as maps for other users to view.

Freelance Interaction DesignerVarious San Francisco Companies Jul 2002 - Jan 2016Outside of Futurefarmers, (we still collaborate), I have been working on various projects for Odopod an interactive design company that makes elaborate websites and applications for devices. I have worked there as both a coder and an interaction designer on projects such as the Tape site for Nike Soccer, and parts of Nike Skateboarding. I have also worked with them extensively on mobile phone applications using FlashCast technology for Macromedia. Some of the more conceptual work that I have done there has been for Yahoo, designing interfaces for finding and managing content in interactive television. In 2004, my wife, Amy Balkin, and I collaborated on a majorproject for Greenpeace, exxonsecrets.org, visualizing the funding of think tanks and institutions that are skeptical of human causes of climate change.Currently, I am working for Chatango.com.

Freelance Web Designer And CoderVarious Companies In London Sep 1997 - Jul 2000In 1997 I became a freelance web designer; my first project was for www.skatestore.com. I designed and built a dynamic magazine, bulletin board, and store for them in Cold Fusion, and Flash 3. In early 1998 and worked on a long project for Pearson publishers scripting the HTML for a redesign of the Financial Times website, www.ft.co.uk.I was accepted into the Royal College of Art in 1998 and spent the next two years studying interaction design (Computer Related Design). We mostly worked in collaborative teams, on both physical and onscreen design problems. The focus of my study was on designing online tools for communities. One project I helped create was the ePAD, a sketch of a digital paper system for groups. We created a simple interaction language for the users to create and manage text and images they created in a meeting situation. My final project was called Prototype World, which was a social site which later became www.communiculture.org.
