About Josh O.
Ever since early high school, I knew that I wanted to be an engineer. At the time, it was for the sole purpose of being able to build whatever I want, but that was enough to push me into University where I had to make one of the toughest decisions: "What kind of Engineer do I want to be?" I first started off with the idea of being a chemical engineer as chemistry was my favorite subject in highschool, but I quickly realized that it wasn't for me. I then decided to take a look into mechanical engineering for my love of the automotive industry, but found that it just wasn't interesting enough on it's own. A year or so into my bachelors degree, I finally heard the word: "Mechatronics." Despite the fact that "Mechatronics Engineering" was the coolest sounding discipline that I had heard of at the time, I found that it focused on integrating four of my favourite subjects: mechanics, electronics, control systems, and software. Since then, I've worked on many mechatronics-related projects. These include, but are not limited to:- An automated winding system for a town clock,- a control system for regulating temperature and humidity inside of an environmental chamber, - and an attitude control system for pointing the high-resolution imager of a CubeSat nanosatellite toward Prince Edward Island, Fast-forward to the present day where I've completed my masters degree (focused on the CubeSat project) and I'm now working the second position of my engineering career as a Software Engineer at Baltimore Aircoil Company. Aside from professional work, I've also been working on my own lab set-up for pursuing mechatronics as a hobby.Something that differentiates myself from many other engineers is that I'm great with hands-on work. While sitting behind a desk and planning-out a design is both necessary and enjoyable, I prefer that my job does not end there. I'm competent in the use of many tools and I like to be a part of the manufacturing process that brings my design to life, whether that means wiring a control panel, writing lines of code, fabricating / assembling mechanical components, or anything else that may involve getting my hands dirty. One of my biggest traits, whether it be good or bad, would be my attention to detail. If something that I've produced is not working perfectly, I will not stop until it's working as desired. Although I sometimes get carried away with the little things, my philosophy is that the small issues are just going to cause larger problems in the future, so I may as well fix the smaller problems while they're still manageable.
