I supervise Reuters politics and general news team in coverage of North and South Korea, with an emphasis on the political and military standoff over North Korea's nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles. In September 2018 I arranged access for and led a multimedia team of Reuters journalists during a rare reporting trip to Pyongyang, where we covered leader Kim Jong Un's attempts to woo the world with a revamped military parade and the return of the iconic "Mass Games" performances. I also helped lead coverage of the launch of North Korea's largest ballistic missile, and the unprecedented summits between North Korean and American leaders in Singapore and Hanoi, coordinating spot coverage and providing in-depth analysis and enterprise stories.

Kabul, Afghanistan

I covered all aspects of Afghanistan, from war to politics and the economy. As the first journalist to report from the secretive U.S. Air Force drone bases in both Afghanistan and the U.S., I filed exclusive articles and widely-used photography.

Afghanistan

I helped lead a bureau in overseeing logistics and organizing coverage of Afghanistan and the Middle East, documenting America’s failed attempts to extricate itself from the conflicts and tracking the rise of Islamic State. My work included embedded combat patrols with U.S paratroopers along the volatile border with Pakistan; investigating defense contractors; flying on air missions; analysis of the Afghan presidential election, and extensive embeds with Afghan forces. In 2015 I was the first international journalist to report while embedded with Afghan troops fighting to take back the city of Kunduz from resurgent Taliban militants. I also reported with militias fighting Islamic State on the battlefields of Iraq, investigated Moscow's counterterrorism policies, and covered the 2014 NATO Summit in Wales.

I focused on the intersection of technology, politics, and national security, which included issues like cybersecurity, surveillance, and privacy. Highlights included a National Journal magazine cover story on global Internet freedom, and an exclusive article on police using an experimental emergency communications system and smart phones to monitor protestors at the Republican National Convention. I also authored a regular column and contributed to a technology blog.

Wrote reports on national political issues, assisted Capitol Hill reporters, and interviewed national leaders.

Greater Salt Lake City Area

Delivered in-depth and breaking news coverage as full-time politics and crime reporter at major newspaper. Took photos and contributed to political blog. Also covered courts and crime, including major capital punishment and murder cases. Established and developed crime team Twitter feed. I was consistently listed as one of the most-viewed writers on the paper's website.
