Strategy Manager
Current
Senior Communications & Engagement Officer
I lead on communications and engagement for the Future Midwife project and the Quality Assurance function.I’m responsible for ensuring the External Affairs contributions to these priority programmes are delivered on time and on budget, and coproduced with senior stakeholders as well as mass audiences.I’m very interested in midwifery, and I’ve enjoyed working with globally renowned midwives like Professor Mary Renfrew to help shape the future of the profession in the UK.I devised and delivered the communications and engagement activity for the Future Midwife consultation, which received more than 1,600 responses. I was particularly pleased that over 1,000 of these responses came from members of the public. It’s also a really interesting time for the NMC, with a new Chief Executive and a brand new strategic direction, which is being coproduced with stakeholders and interested partners across the UK.
Parliamentary Researcher To Conor Mcginn Mp
I ran day to day operations in Conor’s Westminster office, leading on campaigns, policy and media and advising on influencing the parliamentary agenda.Conor has a unique role in the House of Commons, as someone who grew up in Armagh, Northern Ireland, and now sits as a Labour MP for St Helens North.I had the opportunity to work closely with the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee and continue building the skills needed to support the work of a campaigning backbench MP.This included planning and delivering sustained and coordinated campaigns for Helen’s Law and equal marriage in Northern Ireland - both inside and outside Parliament.I’m very proud that both campaigns are now set to achieve positive changes in the law!
Deputy Director
As a self-employed consultant, I managed operations at this not-for-profit group, which aims to promote goodwill and encourage political dialogue in Northern Ireland, Ireland and across the UK.I was responsible for all events, including the annual St Patrick’s Day reception in the House of Lords and fringe events at party conferences. I also launched a new annual fundraising dinner, raising the organisation’s profile and generating new income streams.I reformed the governance structure by establishing a new Advisory Committee of experts and representatives from across the political, business, legal and financial communities.I advised on facilitating inter-parliamentary dialogue, including building support for a programme of reciprocal delegations between the UK Parliament and Irish Parliament (Oireachtas), in February and November 2017.The Oireachtas delegation of Irish MPs - the largest ever to visit Westminster - met with then Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and leaders of the other parties to discuss British-Irish relations and Brexit.
Parliamentary Assistant To Baroness Harris Of Richmond Dl
As a Co-Chair of CHAMP, I provided parliamentary research and support to Baroness Harris for just under a year.
Parliamentary Researcher To Michael Dugher Mp
I returned to work in Michael’s office as a Parliamentary Researcher in 2015. I spent nearly two years in this role, and I learned a lot.During this time period, there was a general election, a new Leader of the Labour Party and a referendum on the UK’s membership of the EU. It was a real privilege to have a ring side seat in Parliament through all this, and it was also a challenge.Michael also moved from the Shadow Cabinet to the back benches, a change which - paradoxically - gave me more responsibility and control over the output of the office. I’m most proud of using this position to deliver a campaign against government cuts to community pharmacies, which was my first major campaign.I also learned the value of good communication and interpersonal skills; that when you answer the phone to a member of the public with a complex problem, it’s worth taking the time to listen to their story.
Frontbench Visits Co-Ordinator
When Parliament was prorogued during the 2015 General Election campaign, I worked in the Frontbench Visits Team at Labour HQ.
International Client Co-Ordinator
After graduating, I briefly worked at RIPA International, formerly known as the Royal Institute of Public Administration.
Parliamentary Researcher To John Spellar Mp
After interning for Michael, I was fortunate to be offered a three month stint as a Parliamentary Researcher in John’s Westminster office. This gave me the opportunity to put the skills I learned as an intern into practice in a paid position, with different ways of working, before I returned to Leeds for the final year of my degree.
Intern To Michael Dugher Mp
I interned in Michael’s Westminster office as part of my degree whilst studying at Leeds. I learned how Westminster works from the ground up, answering the phones and drafting replies to constituents’ letters.I was fortunate to work with some fantastic people who taught me the basics of campaigning, media handling, policy making and keeping cool under pressure.I also learned to respect the way Parliament works, and got my first insights into how to influence it.
