In 1998, I graduated from IPFW with a B.F.A. in Commercial Art and a tackle box full of art supplies I would never use again. I interned with Boyden & Youngblutt Advertising where I learned graphic design in earnest. I tempered my ego while sweeping up and scanning transparencies on the crashiest PowerComputing Mac clone known to man for nothing more than free lunches.One day, my boss handed me a book and said, “You should learn this. I can’t understand it, but this is the future.” Career-wise, it was the best piece of advice I ever took. The book was a guide to PageMill 2.0, and was my introduction to building websites. There was something very gratifying by writing markup, and then seeing what you wrote move pictures and set type. From there, I went on to full-time employment at other advertising agencies, and spent the next dozen years or so fighting with Quark XPress; mounting prints on foamcore; and, from time to time, building a website.Gradually, I grew tired of passing out from self-inflicted X-Acto wounds and got serious about web design and development. I learned everything I could in my spare time.Eventually, I decided to indulge my ego and take a break from steady pay and health insurance and start my own company, Rust Belt Co.Working for myself taught me a lot about business, and life, and proved to be more challenging and rewarding then I ever could have imagined.The last four years of my career have been spent at LaBov Marketing. I’ve had the opportunity to work with some great people and clients like Audi, Harley-Davidson, Volvo, The Macallan, and UPS. I helped take the nascent in-house web design program from virtually nothing to completing over 20 projects. Each was an opportunity for me to refine techniques that I already knew, and add news tricks to my bag.I also wrote my own “starter kit” of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and created a research-based, goal-oriented web development process called “Clarity”.
