About Joshua Cure
Growing up by the beautiful coast of San Diego, I have always imagined myself an adventurous and rewarding future as I look to the open ocean. Having recently graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in Biology, I have a strong passion in learning and exploring more about what makes our world so unique, and how I can implement my own knowledge to improve the lives of many. Studying as a pre-physician assistant student, I was involved in the SDSU American Red Cross Club and Pre-Physician Assistant Student Association (PASA), where we valued collaborative problem solving, compassion and empathy, and effective communication. I aided in reaching out to medical professionals to give guest presentations, and organized efforts for fundraisers such as blood drives. For two semesters, I worked under a graduate student studying the effects of polychlorinated biphenyls on the mussel species Mytilus edulis at the SDSU Coastal and Marine Institute Laboratory. I conducted various tests to measure the mussels' pH and temperature, and summarized our findings in a research paper.Throughout my time as an undergraduate student, I became familiarized with laboratory techniques and procedures such as BLAST sequencing, DNA electrophoresis & electroporation, spectrophotometry, PCR, and western blotting. I also gained experience in experimental design: I introduced a bacterial plasmid with an antibiotic resistance gene, Tn10, then constructed a digital plasmid in silico using Serial Cloner. I also was able to independently identify an unknown bacterial strain out of a pool of 38 Enterobacteriaceae through efficient selection of biochemical assays including MR-VP test and urea hydrolysis.Having taken courses in biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, neurobiology, immunology, medical microbiology, and biostatistics, I realize the significance of each field and their impact on the modern world. I believe that even one person can make an impact, and together, real change follows. I am optimistic for the future, and look forward to working with the greatest minds to discover our full potential.
