Throughout my education and placement for the City of Oshawa, I have gained experience in various fields of biology and environmental science including data collection and analysis, GIS analyses, as well as forestry and urban planning. During my placement for the City of Oshawa, I was responsible for analyzing and manipulating Oshawa's tree canopy inventory in ArcGIS, which consisted of over 40,000 street trees and over 500 urban forests, to create an Urban Forest Management Plan. Oshawa's tree canopy inventory was analyzed to determine their street tree and urban forest health, total canopy cover, canopy cover in each land use class, species composition, as well as their D.B.H. and total height. During this time I was introduced to i-Tree, which is a state-of-the-art, peer-reviewed software suite from the USDA Forest Service which provides urban and rural forestry analysis and benefits assessment tools. i-Tree can be used in a vast range of scenarios, and can perform many different functions.While employed with Minnow Aquatic Environmental Services I gained valuable field experience in a remote setting. I was apart of their Fish Salvage program on the Cote Gold Mine where I was able to showcase and improve on many skills including but not limited to fish handling and meristics, working in a remote setting, using hoop nets, minnow traps, and seins, as well as working with and around heavy machinery.
