    Ucla
Conducted a 10-week research project focused on understanding the complex carbohydrate digestive pathways and fatty acid producing pathways of gut microbacteria B. theta and B. ovatus. Used molecular cloning to knockout the rate limiting enzymes in the production fatty acids acetate and propionate to be cultured in mice, seeing the effect of these knockouts. I also utilized molecular cloning to overexpress these two enzymes.

We coordinated volunteer events such as bake sales to raise donation funds for the American Cancer Society during October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We also managed and delegated a team of 9 cabinet officers to achieve fundraising and meeting goals. These officers have not only currently kept the club up and running for 2 additional years after Vivian and I graduated in March of 2020, but they have also expanded and grown to engage in further volunteering activities such as starting up a blanket drive tradition for the homeless. Since Co-Presidents and Co-Founders, Vivian and I, have started the club, we have both seen the club membership grow to as many as 40 pre-health students during our period of leadership until March of 2020 and we are very proud that we were able to help so many students obtain the necessary extracurricular experience needed for professional health school applications after their time at Whittier College. I learned many technical skills related to maintaining a healthy tissue culture, preparing treatments and cell media, and using a machine called a flow cytometer to analyze and interpret my results. When I finished this project in November, I crafted my experiment into a poster that was titled “The Effects of Combining Resveratrol with Cisplatin to Treat Leukemia". I then presented this poster at the Southern California Conferences for Undergraduate Research at Pasadena City College in November of 2018.In this experience, I have learned and mastered the following skills: -Utilizing Proper Sterile Technique Working in a Tissue/Cell Culture Room-Sustaining a High Viability Culture of Human Jurkat (T cells) cells and Nor 20 (B Cells) Cells-Utilizing Hemoctymeters and Trypan Blue Staining to Count Cells and Measure Cellular Concentration-Preparing and Purifying RPMI and 10% Fetal Bovine Serum Media to Nourish Cells-Preparing Chemical Reagents such as Cisplatin and Resveratrol in Correct Dilutions for Experiments-Staining Already Treated Cells by Utilizing a Primary Antibody called PARP-Properly Learning how to Operate a Flow Cytometer to Measure and Analyze Cellular Apoptosis Show less
