About Joshua Larson

Hello! My name is Josh Larson. I am a first-year Biochemistry and Pre-Med student at Northeastern University, and a part of the John Martinson Honors Program. I have a passion for biology, chemistry, and medicine. I enjoy biomedical research and exploring various other science, math, humanities, and the arts course topics. I am a lifelong rower and skier and trained at my local restaurant as a line cook and dishwasher. I play the guitar and chess and enjoy time with my family, among other things.At Northeastern, I look forward to engaging in challenging coursework, getting involved in various communities on and off campus, volunteering at local organizations and hospitals, participating in research at the collegiate level, and taking part in global experiences and experiential learning. As an aspiring medical student, I aim to become a physician in an area of medicine that excites me.

    This job shadow followed Dr. Stephen Jones and his lab colleagues at UNH and the Jackson Estuarine Laboratory. I shadowed and helped with fieldwork and lab work. The lab focuses on Vibrio testing in oysters and water testing for human contaminants. I oversaw and participated in water sample collection methods throughout multiple southern and coastal New Hampshire watersheds. In the field lab, I learned microbiology techniques, filtered water samples, and prepared agar plates to grow bacteria from the samples. I also shadowed Dr. Jones' assistants at UNH and observed and discussed PCR analysis and other molecular biology techniques for finding human contaminants in watersheds. This job shadow was part of a senior capstone project in my Biomedical Class in high school.
