Responsible for the care and promotion of the Capitol’s fine art collection

The employee in the position of Master Decorative Painter at the 1879 Michigan State Capitol is responsible for the restoration, maintenance, and preservation of over nine acres of decoratively painted surfaces in the building. Working under the supervision of the Director of Capitol Facilities, this person evaluates and resolves damage to the building’s historic surfaces. This includes the analysis, documentation, surface preparation, and use of traditional techniques such as marbling, wood graining, gilding, glazing, striping, stenciling, and free hand painting the replication and/or preservation of surfaces established during the building’s restoration from 1989-1992. In addition the employee serves as a key advocate for the preservation maintenance of the building. A thorough understanding of the philosophy, approach and techniques involved in historic preservation is essential. Duties include assisting in the development and implementation of a computerized preventive maintenance program, establishing and directing a training program for training apprentice decorative painters, training janitorial and other staff in the proper methods for cleaning and maintaining historic surfaces, and serving as a supervisor to outsourced work. The employee may also be responsible for, or assist in, the preservation and maintenance of other historic Capitol elements such as lighting and portraits.
