I study the fundamental surface dynamics that underpin globally significant chemical processes. I’m an avid surface scientist and am trained in the arts of STM, AFM, SEM + EDS, confocal Raman, AES, LEED, and general UHV sample preparation and maintenance. My area of expertise is the visualization of reactive scattering on surfaces. Using a unique ultra high vacuum (UHV) setup, I take atomic scale pictures of surfaces after exposure to non-equilibrium fluxes of reactive gases. Pairing a supersonic molecular beam with an in-situ scanning tunneling microscope (STM) allows for tight control of reaction conditions at the gas-surface interface and spatiotemporal visualization of changing surface morphology.My research has currently focused on nitrogen dissociation on Ru(0001) and the moiré directed oxidation of epitaxial graphene by ground state atomic oxygen.
