Joshua Morrison is a Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer at Frolic Community. I first met Josh when he, as a sophomore enrolled in my graduate Leadership and Organization course at Brown University. He was head and shoulders above all my students in his ability to synthesis, critically analyze, ask good questions, listen, look at an issue from all sides, build consensus, facilitate, lead, and effectively communicate across contexts and constituencies. Josh intuitively understands the importance of ecological and cultural contexts in leading, community development, neighborhood revitalization and planning. More importantly, he consciously and purposefully works to honor those contexts. Cut to 2009, I was co-directing a brand new college program—College Unbound— (in its final year of planning) that was located in a high poverty neighborhood hit hard by the housing crash. At its most basic, we were looking to utilize Federal Neighborhood Stabilization Plan dollars to purchase 10 – 12 properties that would serve has residential housing for our college students, while providing a way to anchor the revitalization efforts of our community Since neighborhood development/revitalization is not the mission of our non-profit (education is) we were looking to bring on to our team an individual who could lead this effort. I immediately thought of Josh. Everyone at the table thought I was a bit crazy for recommending a senior in college for this daunting task. Josh worked seamlessly with our lawyer and key stakeholders. Josh understood our vision and sifted through the federal regulations to develop a proposal that would meet the guidelines and fulfill our vision. Josh saw opportunities where others saw obstacles; solutions where others were blinded by the “way things are always done” mentality. Josh skillfully navigated the “politics” and difficult individuals and situations. To that end, Josh put together an entire plan (budget, renderings, prospective properties, full proposal) for us to purchase properties, with College Unbound serving as a much-needed anchor from which to build. Josh thoughtfully and tirelessly worked to craft a proposal that took into account neighborhood needs and our needs. Needless to say, if I could hire Josh I would—without hesitation. Simply, he is exceptional, truly exceptional. He understands the work, is thoughtful, so bright, dedicated, highly motivated, and always a part of the solution"
