With a focus on health care reform, I provide legal advice and consulting services to health insurance companies, state-based exchanges, industry groups, health care providers, and non-profit foundations. Some key activities include:o Providing legal and strategic advice to health care providers and health insurance companies regarding implementation of all facets of the Affordable Care Act, the Medicaid Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA), and other federal legislation and regulation;o Working with a state-based health insurance exchange to develop policies and agreements related to a variety of policy and operational areas, including privacy and security requirements for participating health insurance issuers and compliance with federal requirements related to privacy and securityo Providing advice to state agencies regarding risk adjustment in the commercial health insurance market;o Working with several major health care industry groups and stakeholder coalitions to develop and implement strategies to address key priorities, including identifying opportunities to work with federal regulators

- Researching the status of current and pending legislation, monitoring the activities of Congress, agencies, and other actors- Compiling information for and writing a weekly Health Care Reform update sent to Mintz Levin clients. The update details the activities taken by Congress, executive agencies, states, and other organizations regarding health care reform- Compiling summaries and fact sheets for clients to help them understand legal and policy issues that affect their interests

- Researched and prepared memoranda on various legal topics for corporate counsel, including HITECH meaningful use requirements, governance of Federally Qualified Health Centers, governmental immunity, and various hospital liability issues.- Attended Board meetings and other management meetings to become more familiar with the various legal, financial, and operational issues facing the hospital district.

During my 2L and 3L years, I performed research for Prof. Larry Palmer, a health care professor at William & Mary. I researched a number of topics related to health care law, including ERISA preemption and its effect on health care reform efforts; bioethics and the Tuskegee Syphilis Study; health care reform at the local, state, and federal levels; environmental health issues; informed consent; legal ramifications of electronic medical records; institutional methods for increasing patient safety; and various legal methods for addressing fetal alcohol syndrome.I am currently working with Prof. Palmer on a joint project on ERISA..

Worked primarily on social security cases: preparing documents, communicating with the court, and requesting information from providers. Researched regulatory issues relating to social security, such as individual eligibility for benefits, the binding effect of prior factual determinations, and scope of review.

Reviewed contracts with physicians, clinics, and hospitals to ensure that the contracts were in compliance with with federal regulations such as the Stark law and the federal anti-kickback statuteResearched various legal issues for corporate counsel, including hospital staffing issues.

• Researching legal issues, including the admissibility of a defendant’s previous testimony, scope of the right to privacy in a police station, and the scope of RICO prosecutions.• Preparing cases to be argued by the Commonwealth Attorneys
