I work on the Platform Team, building the underlying services and systems for the "TEAM" Platform--our web- and mobile-based project management and collaboration suite of products. My first project was building the XACML-based Authorization subsystem. Then, I worked on a few Performance projects. I've also worked on the Build/Release pipeline and dev tools, moving us closer to a Continuous Delivery workflow. Next, I worked on developing the platform to integrate our existing (legacy/acquired) products into the TEAM platform (SSO, message bus, etc.). Currently, I'm laying the groundwork for the rest of the team for a migration to Microservices (Docker, Kubernetes, AKS...), including converting our libraries to .NET Standard 2.0 and porting some existing services to .NET Core. I've also been writing a bunch of development and service/configuration management tooling in F#.Proof of concept for automating our contract/product provisioning system.

I came to PayLock (in 2004) as the second hire in a technology startup that introduced a self-release boot solution as an alternative to the traditional wheel clamps used to deter parking scofflaws. Here, I evolved from a hardware / software engineer to a senior company leader. Ultimately (and happily), I transitioned back into this technical engineering lead role -- to rebuild PayLock’s initial platform, which was strained by the demands of a rapidly growing client base and increasing business complexity. ✔ Led an 18-month project to rebuild PayLock’s core product, BootView, a web-based application and data integration / processing system that served as the backbone of the business. Rebuilt the product layer-by-layer so that it could readily manage the increased data load requirements. ✔ Rebuilt PayLock’s data integration platform, reducing complexity and redundancy. Took the platform from 250K+ lines of code to approximately 125K lines. Also converted a monolithic web app to a REST/Angular app. ✔ Updated the deployment pipeline, taking it from one that was mired by entire-day system shutdowns every six weeks to a continuous delivery solution.✔ Transitioned the development team from 100% on-site to 100% remote, a move that dramatically improved recruitment efforts and output across a sustained period.

I was recruited to build the first version of the technology solution that ran the entire business, BootView. I also worked on the hardware side, managing the first few iterations of the self-release SmartBoot, a keyless wheel clamp with an electro-mechanical release mechanism. ✔ As hire #2 in the entire company, partnered with the company co-founders to recruit, hire and mentor a team of engineers and develop client onboarding and implementation practices.✔ Figured out simple solutions to complex technical challenges, and wrote a lot of code.

I co-founded an independent IT consultancy that provided a diverse range of services to small businesses, including system development, tech implementation and IT support. My primary role here was software developer.

I was recruited into IXL's Financial Services Practice Group as one of the agency’s the only tech leads. I came up with how we were going to build the software (you know, all the technical architect-y stuff.)✔ Led a development team through the relaunch of the FT.com publishing system and web site. ✔ Led technical teams on a variety of projects for a key client account, Merrill Lynch. I lived worked in the U.S., Tokyo and London during this time. It was fun.

I was invited by the company’s co-founder (Steve Conine, who today runs Wayfair.com) to be a part of a team developers that built complex software (mostly web-based applications) for global financial services companies, including Brown & Co., Nellie Mae, Merrill Lynch and the Financial Times. ✔ Learned how to build software, teams and processes. I also read just about every book and blog about software development that I could get my hands on. (I'm a bit of an information hound, and will stop at nothing to stay at the forefront of technology evolution.)
