About Josie Van Der Velden

Video and Stills Producer; Have clipboard [not literally], will travel. Passion(s): walking through a new city early in the morning, reading on the train, thunderstorms.Kryptonite: being put in a box [again, not literally].I am at my best and brightest when i'm finding a new angle to come in from. Yup, i'm THAT person - the one who cuts you off before you've finished telling me the challenge to start listing potential solves, who has a rolodex of incredible makers to bring to the table whatever table it may be (including the dinner table) and who knows an industry as ripe with creativity as production will never stop evolving, so I hang on tight and enjoy the ride. In the end, I’m just a weird drama kid with an extraordinary capacity for detail and an odd ball sense of humour.Verticals:

Creative Director - Community, Catering + Events

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

I joined this local brand with a legacy of great coffee and modern cafes to add connected community and engaging events to their repertoire. In a little over a year and with the full support of co-founders and owners Phil + Seb, we brought to life a colourful and varied series of offsite and in-cafe events alongside paid and community cafe pop-ups that leveraged and gave back to the powerful partnerships of this strong brand - and introduced some new one's I brought into the mix. The result was a weekly calendar spanning 5+ venues and covering off crib, comedy, pop up kitchens, live music, art shows and speaker series plus a roving mobile cafe that popped up at places like the Alberta Children's Hospital and The Calgary Drop-in Centre offering free lattes to people who could use a pick-me-up. From initial creative concepting and partnership engagement through budgets, execution and traditional and social media promotions, I owned it from end to end. On the flip side, I amped up the paid catering + events side of the biz with a strategy refresh and an evolution of the offering to include private cafe rentals and a mobile cafe service packaged up in a thoughtful promotional campaign. As the sole contact for these direct to client lines of business, I promoted to my network and beyond, fielded inquiries, built customer budgets, resourced staff, brewed coffee (so much coffee) and setup and ran events.#thankyoucaffeine

Event Producer

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

When I moved into the role of Event Producer, that's when the BANG of the Whiz-bang really came into play. The growth came with oversight of and collaboration with an Event Coordinator. Together we built out event budgets against creative we sold through to clients, engaged and liaised with a multitude of vendors across all elements of the event plan, mitigated risk by making plan A, B, C (and most often D) and brought the whole thing to life onsite time and time again. In between events, I attended creative event conferences across North America, joined local and international event organizations to learn and grow in my craft, and represented my productions to accept awards that celebrated the spark. My favourite event as a Producer was for the National Music Centre, their signature fundraiser dubbed "Out Loud", held at an old antiques warehouse. The logistics were a puzzle I lived to solve and in the end we had a red carpet backed by a towering step-and-repeat wall built out of custom speakers, old instruments turned art installations with colourful paint splattering the walls and thousands of people coming together to support a new home for music in Canada. Whiz, bang.

Event Coordinator

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

e=mc2 events is where I first learned the term "Whiz Bang" - def; lively or sensational; fast-paced. That pretty much sums up my experience at this internationally acclaimed event production agency. My first 18months were spent as an Event Coordinator, soaking up all I could under my Event Producers and leading elements such as R&D to support creative, staff + volunteer management, contracts + fulfilment, registration + onsite coordination. The highlight reel of my time in this role would have to include Coordinating "The Night That Never Ends" for the Toronto International Film Festival, a James Bond themed event to commemorate the first ever Bond film that included an after party on a barge on Lake Ontario complete with a helicopter and sea-doo action scene in the heart of downtown Toronto.

Manager, Special Events

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

My first "real" job out of University introduced me to the wild and wonderful world of the Arts, joining the development team at the CPO to help fundraise through a non-stop annual special event portfolio that gave my creative x logistics brain the opportunity to flourish. And I loved every minute of it. The development team was small but our fundraising goals were audacious and with our audience representing the upper crust of the Calgary philanthropic community, that translated into a lot of pressure on the special events to engage with the community on their level in order to hit our targets. The doors of every top tier venue in the city swung open to show their support for the CPO, so I got to work pairing them up with inventive themes playing off the concert season and innovative partnerships to bring my visions to life. Building and submitting portfolio budgets to the board while aligning on fundraising targets lay the foundation for a season of 20+ events. From 200 person afterparties to 2 week long wine and art festivals and everything in between, I oversaw all elements, leveraging my team and partners to steer the ship across the vast sea of parties so that the glorious CPO may stay afloat year after year. The result was a powerful and lasting educations in event based fundraising, classical music and fine wine. To this day, the sound of the orchestra tuning their instruments as a hush comes over the audience makes me check for my clipboard.
