Profile bio

About Jouko Piri

I have over 14 years experience from different roles in digital ASIC development. Most of my career I have been in Wireless Modem organisation working with digital desings.- ASIC Project Management- Line Management - Team leading- Power Architecture- Back-end (synthesis, CTS, STA, FV, physical optimization, ECO's etc.)- RTL design- Verification- Design environment development (design process development, design enviration maintenance, tool evaluations etc.++ moreMost interesting roles for me has been team leading/project manager roles. I think reason is simply coming from my natural behavior - I take easily leadership in working and leisure activities (e.g I'm in board of one sport club and coaching kids football team) My way of leading teams is to be part of team - not rising myself to higher position. I require a lot from teams but I'm also working hard myself. I have received lot of good feedback of my manager skills from higher management and specially from teams I have been leading. Basic principles are : Keep Your table clean - make sure You can provide needed inputs to Your customer in time - help Your team mates. It sounds simple but in real life it requires hard work but it is giving good outcome. Networking and communication with different teams/people is also very important for success - my personality is also supporting that since I'm open minded and getting along with people and I'm not afraid to open my mouth. From technical area layout work and power architect roles have been most interesting for me. Layout work is normally always in critical path in design work - and that works well for me. During layout career I had possibility to affect to internal layout flow and customer layout flow, EDA tools features, make own scripting etc. It is hard work under pressure and I'm on my best on those circumstances.

Listed skills include Asic, Power Management, Lsi, Layout, and 22 others.

Member Of Technical Staff

Oulu

Role/tasks TBD

Oct 2014 - Sep 2023

Engineer, Principal - Ic Design

Oulu

My career in Broadcom can be divided to two different sections : 1. Working as a team lead in RFIC digital team2. Solid line menager for LTE integration and verification teamWhen we joined Broadccom my first duty was to plan and execute with small team RFIC digital design technology transfer from Renesas sites which were not part of deal. For that activity I was loaned from my "home" organization. After technology transfer was completed succesfully we started to design new version of RFIC and I was leading RFIC digital team in Oulu. My "loan" period closed on January 2014 and moved back to my original organization, Wireless Modem Digital SoC.I was nominated as a solid line manager for LTE modem integration and verification team. Also I started to do my earlier technical area work, synthesis, for LTE modem domains and sub-modules. During my SLM position I created common synthesis environment which can be used both from LTE modem domain level and sub-module level. We already started to plan and execute next updated LTE modem when Broadcom decided to leave from modem business. My tasks in Broadcom positions:- plan, execute and verify RFIC digital technology transfer- planning of new RFIC digital design schedules, team allocation and give inputs to architecture work- team leading in both RFIC digital and LTE SLM positions- define and implement new synthesis environment for more common use- run synthesis and take care of LTE domains and sub-modules synthesis quality (area, timing, leakage etc) Working on RFIC organization was giving me more understanding of digital design challenges in RFIC. Also it was good learning from RFIC architecture point of view. Working as a SLM for LTE modem integration and verification team was giving kind of "back to the roots" feeling since I continued team leading activities but also started to do synthesis work which I have been doing many years in the past.

Oct 2013 - Oct 2014

Power Architect - Senior Project Manager

Oulu

After Project manager position I took new interesting resposibility and started as a Power Architect in wireless technology organization. Power consumption has increased lately a lot in consumer electronics and all companies are putting lot of effort to decrease consumption. Even if power consumption has been one of Key Performance Indicator in our modem designs we decided to put even more effort to that area.As a power architect my responsiblity is to increase understanding of power consumption through various teams (algorithm, ASIC HW, SW, etc), take care of power friendy architecture selections taking into account modem, LSI and platform level implementations. Also one important part is to study and investigate current consumption in current designs and to find out good decisions to decrease consumption in new designs. My tasks in power architect role has been : - increase power consumption understanding to teams working on modem develpment by specific material and presentations I have created- deep analysis for modem power consumption (leakage and dynamic) and propose changes for lower consumption- participate to modem power consumption estimation work by providing many types of information from studies and analysis results- participate to LSI level power consumption reduction by analyzing design and proposing enhancements- participate to platform level power consumption reduction by analyzing design and proposing enhancementsWorking as power architect have increased a lot of my understanding of whole platform consumption and "opening eyes" for teams where from to reduce consumption to get best possible end result. That is very important in platform work - with good selections on modem side for example can actually be not so good selection when looking from whole platform level - and vice versa. In this role - as in project manager/team leader roles there is needed lot of communication over different teams.

2012 - Oct 2013

Asic Project Manager - Senior Project Manager

Oulu

During that time when Nokia sold wireless technology to Renesas Mobile Corporation I was already working as a project manager from Nokia side for first Renesas LTE ASIC chip and for MSIC chip.In that role I was taking care that all Nokia requirements are fullfilled. During that time I was able to extend my knowledge to MSIC side also. I was part of platform team and got more undertanding of platform level compoents and activities.Tasks in this project manager position for Digital IC and MSIC : - Requirements approval - schedules approval and follow-up- implementation approval and follow-up- verification approval and follow-up- etc.- Networking with company internal platform and modem teams, Renesas ASIC teams, SW teams etc After transfer period from Nokia to Renesas Mobile Corporation I started to work as a senior project manager for Renesas first quad mode modem ASIC chip. In this position I used my experience from earlier projects. On the end project was put on hold on the requirements approval time frame and I had possibility to go to next challenges.

2010 - 2012 ~2 yrs

Asic Project Manager - Project Manager

Oulu

Next natural step from team leader was to take responsibility of whole ASIC project execution. My first ASIC project responsibility was to lead first Nokia LTE ASIC execution.I had full resposibility of ASIC execution and in this position I hade followign kind of tasks- Requirements gathering and approval- specifications approvals- implementation planning follow-up and approval, - verification planning, follow-up and approval,- layout work planning, follow-up and approval- sample testing planning, follow-up and approval- Networking with sub-system teams, silicon vendor, tool vendors, SW teams, platform teams etcNaturally on project manager position there is needed very good general technical understanding from different design areas to be able to execute project. On that time we were running this project Nokia announced to stop ASIC development which gave new challenges for project - but overall we did it very well.

2008 - 2010 ~2 yrs

Layout Team Leader - Team Leader

Oulu

During layout designer position I started to get more and more interested to lead layout team. After few years layout work and few projects I was ready for team leading from technical point of view. From natural haviour I am taking responsibility as a team leader in work and leisure. On that time I was already in position in resposibility in our sport club (+1000 members) and leading one division in sport club.My tasks in team leader position : Overall layout execution planning, following, reporting and responsibility. In layout team leading position I was also doing layout implementation work.- Timing requirements approval within team and co-operation teams- synthesis, floorplan, physical synthesis, clock tree synthesis, STA, ATPG, ECO implementation and verification etc. reviews and approval- Full team management (about 10 persons) : Tasks planning for team members, BE execution planning etc. - networking with : silicon vendor, EDA tool vendors, Front-end teams, management etc.- Silicon vendor management : execution planning, reviews for implemantaition and technology etcMy basic thinking in team leading is that I'm always part of team (not in any higher position than other team members) and train can not stop even if some one from team is missing. That thinking was working very well and we rotated people in team so that everyone had one or two special areas and then some secondary design area - and we were successfull on that.

2006 - 2008 ~2 yrs

Layout Designer - Senior Design Engineer

Oulu

After RTL work I wanted to learn more and had possibility to start to work as a layout designer for updated version of 3G ASIC and shrik version of 3G ASIC.Tasks I did in layout designer position- Timing requirements specification- Logical synthesis, floorplanning, physical synthesis, clock tree synthesis, global routing- Static Timing Analysis- ECO implementation and verification- DFT patterns implementation and verification- Nokia side layout flow and environment development and maintenance- scripts creation with perl and tclOn that time ASICs were made in co-operation with Texas Instruments and part of my work was also to participate to TI layout flow development with close co-operation with EDA tool vendors.

2002 - 2006 ~4 yrs

Rtl Designer - Design Engineer

Oulu

After completing thesis work I started my career at Nokia ASIC department as a front-end module designer for first Nokia 3G Modem ASIC. Module is taking care of timing, synchronization, clocking and interrupts for whole modem.Tasks I did in this position : - Specification based on requirements coming from other HW modules, ASIC Top level and SW - RTL/VHDL implementation- RTL verification on standalone level and modem/ASIC level in workstation and emulatior. Netlist simulation with and without delays- sample testing

2000 - 2002 ~2 yrs

Summer Trainee And Thesis Worker

Oulu

I started as a trainee at Nokia mobile Phones doing mostly RTL and netlist verification for 3G modem. After summer I continued as a part time worker in Nokia and doing my thesis work at the same time. Subject for my thesis work was WCDMA modem RX and TX paths power consumption. Thesis work included general information about power consumption, estimation and measurement methods and measurements for modem design in RTL and netlist level which were later compared to silicon measurements.

Feb 2000 - Dec 2000

Summer Trainee

Oulu

I was working as a summer trainee at Nokia Telecommunications production. I was part of team assembling, testing and fixing 2G base station RX/TX modules.
