The professor who runs this lab studies multiple different species of bats. My duties in the lab were to digitize videos of vampire bats so they could be fed into a neural network and train an AI system to recognize the digitized points. Once the AI had been trained to recognize the points, MATLAB code was used to produce residual graphs and 3-D reconstructions of the videos so we could analyze the kinematics of the bat's jump and transition to flight. Finally, RStudio was employed to produce interpretable scatterplots to determine any significant trends in the data.

Prepared agar media for both the microbiology and general biology laboratories. Performed monthly bacteriological subcultures, maintained current and accurate inventory of media, passaged cells for eukaryotic tissue culture laboratory, and other miscellaneous tasks. Assisted my supervisor in training new hires. Required to attend a laboratory safety training covering chemical storage/disposal techniques, biological waste protocols, as well as general safety precautions necessary to work safely in a laboratory. Started as Laboratory Assistant in 2021 and was promoted upon return in 2023.

During the summer of 2022, I assisted my professor and one of her Master's students on two separate projects while also gaining some data for my own analysis to be presented at a research conference put on by my university in the Fall of 2023.The project I assisted my professor's Master's student with was the ant-tending mutualism observed between a rare, endemic butterfly larva (Celastrina humulus) and various ant species. We observed the two species in the field and collected data on when the ant-tending behavior was being observed, the development stage of the larva, and the location in which the behavior was being observed.The project I assisted my professor with was counting larva densities and development stages at each specified location along the study site gradient.I presented data collected on the phenology of the larva and its host plant along the gradient of the study site.
