About Jorge Valencia

Since joining Point Foundation, I have had the honor of overseeing the Foundation's steady financial growth and programmatic enrichments. From granting undergraduate, graduate and community college scholarships to producing national and regional leadership conferences to working alongside our dedicated Board members, staff and funders, it has been a privilege to design Point's infrastructure and lead the organization.I grew up in a Latino, Mormon family in Texas — an environment filled with stigmas and obstacles attached to the acceptance of my sexual orientation. Like many of Point's Scholars, I found opportunity in the face of adversity and used this experience to build on my activism and work towards a better world. Prior to Point, I served as the President & Executive Director of The Trevor Project, the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth and continue to serve on its Leadership Council. Serving on the Board of Affirmation allowed me to help other LGBTQ Mormons and their families live productive lives consistent with their faith and culture. As a political appointee in the Clinton Administration, my tenure at the US Small Business Administration allowed me to hone my skills in public speaking and leadership that have been instrumental in my ability to represent and deepen the impact of these vital organizations that support the LGBTQ community.I can best be reached via email at jorge@pointfoundation.org.

  • The Trevor Project
    President & Executive Director
    The Trevor Project 2001 - 2007
    West Hollywood, Ca, Us
The Trevor Project is a national organization which provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ youth.I was hired by The Trevor Project Founders and Board Chair as its first full-time President & Executive Director in an effort to ensure the organization’s long-term sustainability and to grow its scope and services. I embarked on the organization’s first strategic plan, which led to periods of significant growth, while creating an organizational, programmatic, development and communications infrastructure. By establishing donor groups, national fundraising events and direct mail campaigns, new resources doubled the organization’s budget more than four times over seven years, allowing for an expanded Call Center, the establishment of online counseling, and the deployment of free high school peer-to-peer survival kits. I also served as Trevor’s lead spokesperson — publicly speaking at events and to the press and garnering national media exposure in various broadcast, print and digital outlets. The organization’s impact was further deepened by increasing the number of Board and staff members and recruiting expert professionals to serve at each level.

    Lakeland, Florida, Us
Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) inspires young people to develop into outstanding leaders and become a catalyst for positive change in their homes, schools, workplaces and communities. Streamlining communications and marketing assets was a key component of my role at this 7-region organization that serves 12,000+ youth participants at 70 annual leadership seminars representing 7,200 high schools and driven by 4,000+ volunteers. This was accomplished by a) establishing protocol for all branding and communications, b) furnishing new assets including the creation of website content, collateral materials, event communications surrounding leadership seminars, the World Leadership Conference and the Los Angeles Albert Schweitzer Leadership Awards Gala, and c) bringing press activities in-house.
