My role as a systems engineer involved: General process design and mapping - I designed the complete operating model for the planning department, as well as some logistics systems such as dynamic buffering and Kanban.Introduction of S&OP planning methodology - I worked in a team of 4 to introduce the first S&OP production planning methodology for WEIR Minerals Africa. The S&OP production system aligns production to customer demand on a long term scale. My section of the work was to convert demand into machine capacity detail.ERP systems development - I participated in 2 ERP roll outs (BAAN LN and SAP). My key responsibilities have been gap analysis and data integration between ERP and supporting systems. Visual Management - I designed and programmed the plant’s visual management tools.Developed scheduling tool - I designed and programmed the production scheduling tool currently in use.Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) - I've specified the requirements, scoped, and project managed the implementation of our Manufacturing Execution System (MES) (from integration with MRP to user interfaces). This is the system that guides the flow of material through machining. This was the topic of my master’s research.Managing Change - Both internally with business partners and between customers/suppliers. This involved keeping customers/suppliers up to date with changes in our process, supplying them with information they need, and negotiating workload for the plant.

    I was on a 2 year rotation based program.Rotation 1: R&D Laboratory at the Afrox Gas Equipment Factory (GEF).My job was to modernise the GEF R&D Laboratory by updating testing processes and technology, so as to improve the integrity of test results and the speed at which testing can be done. This project served to prepare the laboratory for ISO accreditation. The aim was achieved by adapting key measurement equipment for PC based communication. The completed system was streamlined from data acquisition to formal result reporting. I designed the experiments based on ISO requirements. From there I specified layout, equipment, processes, data capturing, and reporting requirements.Rotation 2: Managing and executing continuous improvement projects at the Afrox Gas Operations Centre (GOC). Some projects included:Waste treatment - I designed and managed the construction of a 30kL oil separator for cost effective disposal of waste from the dissolved acetylene plant. The project included a project proposal, P&ID, layout design, costing, multiple contractor management, risk assessment, HAZZOP, equipment specification and commissioning, chemical sampling and testing, oil spill response, use of project management methodology and software, operating procedure design, maintenance lifecycle planning, ergonomics of design, and automation of pumping system. Efficiency - An expensive set of components are regularly being stripped and maintained by the workshop staff. I researched and specified a solution using ultrasonic cleaning that requires only minimal labour. Throughput - I did feasibility study on powder coating of cylinders, testing their new characteristics, and comparing them with conventionally painted cylinders.Machine design - I’ve designed a number of machines for various cylinder handling and testing tasks.Plant Layout and Process - I was part of a team that designed a new material flow and layout plan for the dissolved acetylene plant.
