Metsol is a venture capital backed innovation company that has developed a novel patented hydrometallurgical process for the production of zinc oxide. My role in the company revolves around managing plant operation and carrying out extensive research work to develop the final product while implementing solutions to continually improve the process flow sheet. Responsibilities:• Supervision of novel hydrometallurgical production plant involving synthesis of zinc oxide at a capacity of 90TPA with an asset value of $1.5M. • Functional management, training and supervision of Graduate Chemical Engineers and Plant Operators.• Design, operation and maintenance of plant unit processes including crystallisation, filtration, leaching, reverse osmosis, solid-liquid separation and product drying.• Consolidation and analysis of plant data and translation to report format for company stakeholders.• Development of mass and energy balances both empirical and measured for the Metsol plant. • Organisation and management of CAPEX and OPEX optimisation projects in terms of energy and reagent consumption reduction. Project values ranged between $5,000 and $100,000. • Engagement of contractors and procurement of equipment as part of capital projects – these have included filtration equipment from China (project value of $30,000) and dust extraction equipment from New Zealand (project value of $80,000). • Engagement with company stakeholders at all levels including plant operators, technical team and upper management (MD, CTO and Board members).• Planning and production of zinc oxide samples for external analysis and testing by end-users in various countries including Japan, China, Malaysia, Canada and India. • Engineering design in the form of providing PFD and P&ID drawings for larger plant design using AutoCAD® P&ID Suite and Microsoft Visio®.• Preparation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Job Safety Assessments (JSA) and Risk Assessment documentation.

Scaled Management Systems is looking to implement a novel waste water treatment technology on an industrial scale as part of conventional water treatment flow sheets. Responsibilities in this role include:- Assistance with technical aspects of project implementation. - Development of theoretical computer model for proposed treatment system using Computational Fluid Dynamics software ANSYS CFX- Development of tasks from a project management perspective.

While employed at Schweppes Australia, I was given the opportunity to work on a pilot plant project testing the viability of a new compound, Surface Engineered Silica, as a downstream method for the treatment of the factory waste water. Duties included regular water sample collection, pH measurement, Brix turbidity measurement and correlation of data to BOD values as an indication of SES performance. Although the SES is yet to be commercially implemented, the project was taken up as my Honours Research Project, using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and the software ANSYS CFX to simulate an environment containing SES and target contaminants, the results from the work were encouraging and have further helped advance the position of SES as a waste water treatment technology.From January 2013, further experimental trials on a pilot plant system have been conducted, to further validate SES technology.
