Even passionate, engaged, high-performing people can burn out when stretched too thin. Burnout doesn’t suddenly happen, so it is important to recognise early warning signs. For organisations, that means it can be hard to spot employees who are at risk. Many leaders are finding it difficult to have conversations about burnout. And once it is too late, recovery can take a long time. At the core of burnout is physical, mental and emotional exhaustion. I have worked for many years with people who were burnt out, but I understood that the problem could not be solved by focusing on the individual, managing stress and developing resilience. Many of my clients experienced issues at work, from poor relationships with their line manager to micromanagement and excessive workload to inefficient workflows. I am now an academic researcher, an HCPC registered occupational psychologist, a certified business psychologist, Executive Coach, and therapist.
