About Joy Dillard Appel
My research investigates the mechanisms of inequality at the community level, particularly in Atlanta. I generate theory from the findings of my qualitative, comparative-historical, and mixed-methods projects to influence policy and practice. I seek to build relationships within and between communities and local organizations that result in healing and innovative policies, projects, and business endeavors to strengthen community resilience and improve quality of life for community members. In addition to my own research, I have been actively involved in several other research projects, particularly focused on housing inequality, neighborhoods, race, and gerontology. I also have experience teaching, including leading graduate student groups and serving as Teaching Associate. I specialize in Urban Studies and Race and hold a Historic Preservation Certificate; these inform my work on governance, institutions, and inequality. I approach my work from an intersectional feminist perspective, and recognize the necessity of locating diverse standpoints on all issues. My current projects include an examination of capital movement through Atlanta neighborhoods from the perspective of three historic churches, a comparative analysis of pedagogical discussion methods, developing multi-modal methods across contexts, and excavating hidden housing mechanisms (such as co-housing).I'm open to discuss research, teaching, organizational leadership, community development, and anything else you'd like to connect about. Thank you for visiting my profile!
Listed skills include Training, Leadership, Strategic Planning, Account Management, and 21 others.
